I’ve been playing in bands since I was fourteen and once you have that itch you have to scratch it occasionally.

I’m lucky enough to get asked from time to time to do gigs and on March 7 I was asked to sing on the pitch at the JJB Stadium in Wigan. It was the Wigan Warriors game against The Bradford Bulls in the Rugby Super League. I performed alongside my good mate Tony Urchin who is currently touring the world  playing guitar and singing with ex Beatles drummer Pete Best and his band.

We played a short set of party covers including “Chelsea Dagger” by the Fratellis, Ami Winehouse/Zutons favourite “Valerie”, Van Morrison’s perennial favourite “Brown Eyed Girl” and crowd pleaser “Daydream Believer” by The Monkees which never fails to get the Super League crowd singing along. Under the stage name The Rockets we went on to a crowd of around 10,000 just prior to the match kicking off (they got an attendance of 12,588 for the game itself.)

It’s a great honour to be asked to play at the JJB Stadium and this was The Rockets sixth appearance on the pitch. For Tony playing at Stadiums has become part of his world because alongside the weddings and parties he plays here in the UK for LMM The Pete Best Band always include one or two stadium shows in their regular American and Canadian tours . They played at Shea Stadium last year which Beatles fans will remember as the site of one of the Beatles most triumphant  US appearances. The Pete Best Band have also played pre match for the Chicago White Sox baseball team.

You can book Tony Urchin for weddings and parties.See his page on the LMM website for further details

For me Saturdays show was a reminder of the time I was booed by 7,000 people.

The occasion was Bradford Bulls home game against Leeds Rhinos a couple of years ago. I had been asked by The Bradford Bulls to sing their theme tune which they told me was a version of The Backstreet Boys “ Larger Than Life” with new lyrics written to celebrate the Bulls. When the lyrics turned up I quickly realised that they didn’t fit the backing tracks I had for “Larger Than Life.” Indeed they were for a totally different song –Opus “Life Is Life.” I called up The Bulls to ask them if they could supply a backing track and one arrived on the day of the Super League game. It was in the wrong key! I turned up at The Gratton Stadium in Odsal expecting that my sound check would be the closest I would get to performing but once on the pitch with a mic in my hand I thought “well its only two minutes I’ll shout my way through it!”

I shouldn’t have worried because as the Leeds Rhino fans filed in to the stadium I noticed they were made up mainly of lads between fourteen and twenty five. There was no way they were going to put up with me singing the Bradford Bulls theme tune without trying to drown me out. As the song started the Bradford Bulls fans gamely sang along with me whilst 7.,000 Rhino fans stomped their seats and booed as loud as they could. I couldn’t hear a note I sang!

It was one of the most exciting gigs I have played in my life. The atmosphere was electric and I walked off the pitch to a standing ovation from the Bulls fans whilst the Rhinos crowd continued their booing from the away day stand.

There was no booing on March 7 at the JJB Stadium. Tony Urchin and myself had a great day and the Wigan Warriors went on to win 44-10 over the Bradford Bulls.

Our thanks to Simon and the team at  Wigan Warriors for their hospitality. We can’t wait to come back.

Top Tips for Bride and Grooms booking a band with male and female vocals

Sugar Shack Have Both Male And Female Vocals And They Are A Perfect Band For Weddings.

Sugar Shack Have Both Male And Female Vocals And They Are A Perfect Band For Weddings.

Welcome to the first of our occasional posts where we will recommend our favourite bands and entertainment for weddings.

LMM have a number of wedding bands that feature both male and female vocals. It’s a type of band much in demand for weddings and parties because a  dual vocal band, obviously ,offers the widest repertoire possible. It’s also a rarer beast because its difficult to find one good lead singer never mind two!

That said we can heartily recommend the following acts. They  all either  feature two vocalists in the line up permanently or by request. If you need any further help please call our office on 08454 900515 or alternatively email us on info@lmmuk.com or fill in the online enquiry form. We have indicated the home base of each band but be aware that most of our acts travel throughout the UK for shows.

LMM Head Honcho Timbo At Shepherds Bush Walkabout Bush Fire Appeal

LMM have always had a close relationship with Australia.

The founder of LMM , Tim, grew up on the Gold Coast and first arrived in the UK 13 years ago where he played piano and sang in the first Walkabout Australian Theme Bar. Since then LMM has been the first port of call for Australian musicians when they arrive in the UK.

Besides booking some of Australia’s biggest names into intimate UK gigs in the Walkabouts (Grimspoon, Inxs, Ash Grunwald, Jenny Morris, Regurgitator, John Stevens, Rolf Harris,Mental As Anything and Kevin Bloody Wilson are amongst the acts to have played Shepherds Bush Walkabout over the years) LMM has become the home for the best Australian party bands, solos, duos and DJ’s.

When we saw the news about the terrible fires in Australia we knew our acts would expect LMM to organise a fund raiser. Indeed Brendan from the great party band and Rockaoke Act was on the phone within hours of the news breaking suggesting we do an all day charity event .

On March 7 Shepherds Bush Walkabout was the venue for six live party rock bands, three DJ’s and three solo/duos. The event started at 10am and finished at 2am on Sunday. Due to the efforts of the whole team at Shepherds Bush Walkabout and the co promoter , Top Deck , we had 2500 people through the doors for a mammoth session of music and we raised £25,015.59   (over 50k OZ Dollars.) which is pretty astounding for one London pub on one day.

The commemorative tour T-Shirt with the acts names on it sold out early in the day.

The North Kensington and Hammersmith Fire Brigade were outside the venue and Channel Nine from Australia sent over loads of footage for us to play all through the day .The Today Show recorded an intro especially for the venue which was played just before each auction.

LMM would like to thank the generosity of our acts who gave their services for free on the day .Although many of them had other shows in the evening they all played their hearts out and the 2,500 people who attended the  day all had a great time. We would also like to thank the generosity of the Australians, Kiwis and Londoners who supported the Shepherds Bush Walkabout Bush Fire Appeal. Finally a special thanks to Adam the manager of the Walkabout who worked really hard to make the event happen and to James Ridley the LMM sound engineer on the day who helped make the bands sound so great.
