The High Points (And Low) of 2010

Goodbye 2010----hello 2011

Goodbye 2010----hello 2011

As its now past midnight and its New Years Eve I was reflecting on the high and low points of 2010.

I am not going to make this a personal log and comment too much on the rubbish economy, the ridiculous weather (does anyone remember the ash cloud after all this snow?) although they did contribute towards making this a challenging year (when the ash cloud hit we had two bands stranded …one in the UK who couldn’t get to a gig and one over in Cyprus who couldn’t get back from a gig…..luckily there was a silver lining to the Cyprus one in that the bands booking was extended and they were able to stay over and play for another week…..we covered their shows here in the UK and it was all good.)

The snow obviously was a challenge for all our DJs and bands but we had very few cancellations as actsmade special Herculian efforts to get to gigs (Electric Mayhem had the misfortune of having to drive all the way across Europe to Munster during the peak of the snow problem……but they got there as indeed did Lucas who were driving to Edinburgh when the city was brought to a stand still….but they still got to the gig!)The snow has hit our industry bad in terms of people being able to get to night clubs and parties but I suppose it has hit most industries hard with factories having to close, deliveries being disrupted, shops shutting and workers not being able to work.

So although we were hit by the weather one of the high points of the year for me was seeing how much effort our guys made in order to get to work.It was truly impressive.

One of the other high points was our involvement in the media in 2010.

We supplied two musicians for the pilot of the Xmas Baileys cream TV ad campaign.

We supplied the female vocalist for a major new advert which is to air on TV and radio in 2011 .

We supplied a Frank Sinatra Tribute and an Elvis Tribute for a TV sow which aired on prime time TV in Romania on Christmas day.

DJ Big Al wrote and recorded the music for an ITV programme which aired earlier this year.

Of course besides all of this the highlights of the year have been the many thank you emails and letters we have been sent by clients who have booked bands or DJs from us for their weddings, events or parties.

I would have to say though that the Highlight and low point of the year came two hours apart and involved the same event.

I had the great pleasure of booking DJ Jim Brownto play at Guns N Roses secret show which was confirmed for Dingwalls this summer as a warm up to their festival events. As a life long Guns N Roses fan I knew Jim would be over the moon and he was….for about two hours…I then, very unfortunately, had to call him back and cancel as Guns N Roses had decided that they would not need to do a secret warm up set after all.I am currently reading Slashs biography and after hearing about Axl Roses behaviour I am not surprised at this but it was the low point of the year to give Jim the bad news.

Maybe in 2011 eh?

First Class Swing – Video Of A Great Jazz Swing Band For Hire

Tuesday, December 21st, 2010

For many people, myself included, the Christmas party season untill I have heard a great swing band playing one of the classic American song book Christmas tunes.

I have just looked around our great roster of jazz swing bands for hire to weddings, parties and corporates in order to try and find a piece of video of a Xmas song but we don’t appear to have one.

However I did find the great video above of First Class Swing performing a fantastic swing set.

If you want more details then you can find them here http://www.lmmuk.com/band/First+Class+Swing  They are available for hire for weddings, parties, corporates, hotel bookings and theatre shows.Just contact the LMM office for availability and quotes.

“Featuring Simone, from the Ivy Benson Orchestra
An exciting night with hits you’ll know and love from the Swing era – Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller through to vocals like “Mr Bojangles” & “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown” – plus foot stomping “Jools Holland” style Jazz.

“They swing like crazy – Superb !” Sheila Tracy (B.B.C.)
“…A celebration of classic Swing !” (Telegraph)

This show boasts multi-instrumentalists and singers lead by Chris & Simone. Chris, who’s varied career has taken him from Jazz festivals to Top of the Pops, uses his experience gained in playing and writing for Glenn Miller’s Brother (Herb Miller) to bring the songs to life. Saxophonist and vocalist, Simone, has performed with the New Squadroniares and played Lead Alto Saxophone in the later days of the Ivy Benson show band.”

Sheffield City Hall-A Million Memories

Sheffield City Hall-A Million Memories

In response to the post last week thanking Boy On A Dolphin for putting LMM Director Rick on stage as support at their Sheffield City Hall show http://www.lmmuk.com/agentblog/?p=1790  we had this response from a friend of ours and rather than leave it in the comments box we believed it deserved a blog of its own.
If you are looking for top quality entertainment for your wedding or party please skip straight to www.lmmuk.com or call the office but if you want a bit of a giggle read the below.
“The Sheffield City Hall holds so many memories for us Sheffielders all doesn’t it?
I’m reminded of so many great gigs I have seen there.  I was at the Dr Feelgood one too.  I remember seeing Black Sabbath original line up (for a short time only) as the power kept cutting off in the days when I used to gatecrash round the back of the City Hall when it was a case of legging it from the bouncers who were all about minimum age 85. So it was like taking sweets from a baby really.  The gig was that inconsistent they (Sabbath) ended up leaving the stage.  They were supported by a very early Van Halen who treated the ‘power cut’ aspect very eligantly when David Coverdale shouted “It looks like Sheffield hasn’t got enough power for us – better plug into another Ciiiiidddeeeeyyyyyyy!!!!!!  (that word is ‘city’ btw).

So these problems have even persisted after ‘Don’t Look Back’.  Those blokes from the Dylan film probably still worked there too who were saying “for crying out loud whats wrong with it” etc etc.
The ‘Television’ supported by Blondie gig always stands out as one of the best City Hall shows and obviously the Morrisey gigs.
Also the Who were amazing for sheer volume alone especially when you were stood only a couple of yards away from Townsend (as me and my mate Andy Parr were) – this was at the time of ‘You Better You Bet’.
I still have all my tickets in a scrap book (what a train spotter).
Also it shouldn’t do really but the Lou Reed gig also stands out.  There was hardly anyone there and I went down thinking I would be turned away with it being a sell out.  (My dad had been ill so I was preoccupied and missed getting a ticket).  Instead I had that front side block to myself apart from this loopy old  woman who walked in carrying her shopping who decided to sit there too.
She was there in error as she had won the ticket in a competition on Radio Sheffield.  She had never heard of Lou Reed and asked me if he was like Tony Capstick!!!!  Her face was a picture when he eventually strolled on looking like Vince Taylor in his black leathers.  I was sat so close I may has well have been in Lou Reeds lap (ooopppppps perhaps not – him being the old  deviant he is).  Also when he walked on I felt a bit embarrassed for him because he looked straight at me and this old loopy  women sat at the front and must have thought ‘what the hell – is this supposed to be an audience’.  It didn’t improve his mood but he did do his entire 3 hour show not playing any hits as it was his latest concept album and he insisted it had to been played in its entirety and in order to create the effect of a film.  The old woman remained stationary all night looking quite bored and then (all of a sudden) when he did a VERY RELUCTANT version of Sweet Jane at the end I’ve never seen anyone go as mental!!!!  It was as if she was in one of those voodoo cermonies where they lose control and started spitting liquid and stuff.  The contents of her bags of shopping were rolling all over the front area.  Occasionally you kept standing on a cabbage or something similar!!!
Lou Reed is the only person who seems to be great at murdering his own songs live.  Why does he always mess them up or do a really radical version that sounds nothing like the original prototype???  Having said that I’ve just bought an ‘only just discovered’ archive recording of a live gig he did at the time of Transformer on the Easy Action label which is quite good.  They specialise in releasing recovered long lost bootlegs and outtakes.  Some are ok and some are really bad.  There were 2 great hecklers at this gig too who were in stereo as one was sat being my imediate left and one being to my imediate right.  One kept shouting ‘Talk to us Looouuuuuuu!!!’  because the old Godfather wouldn’t say much in between the songs and this heckler really pissed him off.  The other had a really strong Liverpudlian accent and seemed to be saying every 10 minutes “Lou – you’re a f******* geeeeeeenius mate!!!!!”  After listening to 3 hours of that it did become like Japanese water torture.
I would imagine that Lou now develops a nervous twitch whenever the word ‘Sheffield’ is mentioned (if it ever gets mentioned).”

Christmas 2010 Entertainment Round Up

Thursday, December 16th, 2010

Its been ridiculously busy in the LMM office over the past few weeks which is one reason why we haven’t been blogging as often as we would like. The Christmas season is well under way and we have had more Xmas bookings in 2010 than in 2009 so that’s great news both for us and for signs that the economy may be in better shape than we give it credit for.

The kind of events we have been supplying entertainment to in December 2010 have been wide and varied.

Even picking one day at random you can get a feel for the scope of the LMM entertainment team and breadth of our client base and experience.

Yesterday (December 15 2010) we had DJ Matt Stephens playinga Golden Years Lunch and getting 100 senior citizens conga-ing around a Hotel in Manchester. We had mobile DJ Big Al playing a posh party for the Premier Ship at The Albannach Restaraunt in London. We had a Frank Sinatra tribute playing a corporate party over in Romania. We had a live music duo playing an after work drinks party in Central London. We had a live karaoke band AKA Rockaoke or Bandeoke playing at a Christmas party in London and another one playing up in Carlisle. We had a couple of great live covers acts playing at holiday parks. We had a mobile DJ playing Bluu in Moorgate for a City Of London after work party. We had a whole bunch of bands and DJs playing at High Street venues like Walkabout and we had the comedy shows at Highlight Comedy clubs being hosted and DJed by our team of Highlight soundtech DJs.

Besides all of that on Dec 15 Lorraine Crosby recorded the lead vocal for a TV/Radio advert which will be widely heard and seen in 2011.It was produced by a name producer and LMM were proud to have been asked to identify the perfect vocalist for this advert.

That’s just one day in December!!!

Remember LMM for all your entertainment needs whether it be a mobile DJ or live band or something a little unusual.LMM are the entertainment agency to go to in order to guarantee quality, best price and reliability.

Boy On A Dolphin-Sheffield City Hall Dec 11 2010

Boy On A Dolphin-Sheffield Band

Boy On A Dolphin-Sheffield Band

Boy On A Dolphin are a great Sheffield band with a long history stretching back to the late 1980s and a large and loyal following in the Sheffield area and beyond.

It has become a Christmas tradition that they play at Sheffield City Hall each December with tickets getting snapped up twelve months in advance and several generations of the same family going along to hear the band play at this 2000 seater plus venue.

Boy On A Dolphin always try and do something a Little special on these Christmas shows and this year they decided that instead of having a support act they would invite six local singer-songwriters to perform one song each.I was honoured to be asked to open the proceedings.

Sheffield City Hall is a beautiful venue and even without the memories of the iconic bands I have seen there over the years it would be special to stand on the massive solid oak stage and gaze out at the  tiers of balconies, the enormous chandelier and the deco ceiling.Large civic buildings with this kind of grandeur made out of granite and solid wood paneling will not be built again. They were a product of their time built to celebrate the success of the local industry  built to last and to impress.

Besides this Sheffield City Hall was the first place I saw a live band (DR Feelgood with support from Mink Deville!!) and co-incidentaly the site of one of my favourite ever gigs (Morrisey -I have seen him three times at Sheffield City Hall but the last show I was three rows from the front and it was awesome.)It is also the venue featured in DA Pennebakers documentary about Bob Dylan (Dont Look Back) when the power cuts out and the electricians coming  to fix the fuse seem like they are from another age and over the years has seen everyone from The Beatles to JLS grace the stage.

I played the venue back in the mid nineties in support of Curtis Stigers but it was a great honour to be asked to play with Boy On A Dolphin on Saturday.

I bumped into many musicians that I know but rarley see including Paul and Steve from function band The Sharp Cuts, sax player Steve Beighton from The Paul Carrack Band,Boy On A Dolphin and Acoustic Angels,Julian,Shaun, local producer/guitarist Cary Baylis (who has worked with everyone from Take That to the Spice Girls and who I had the good fortune to play in a band with for a few years etc etc.

It was a great night followed by several drinks down at the Limit Reunion at The Casbah where again myself and my good friend John bumped into many old aquaintences and friends.

For me Christmas started on Saturday confirmed by a Baileys on ice at 2.30am in The Limit Re union with the sound of Wires “I am The Fly” blasting out of the speakers!

LMM Function and Tribute Acts Playing Overseas On Dec 10 2010

Friday, December 10th, 2010

LMM have five amazing acts playing overseas this evening. Our brilliant Sinatra tribute act and one of our U2 tribute bands are both playing events in Romania. The U2 tribute band event takes place in Romanias largest film studio and will involve a large production show for over 400 guests.

Five piece function band Sugar Shack play a nightclub event in the same country. They will be rocking the house at an upscale nightclub in Bucharest.

Over in Norway our ABBA tribute band are playing a massive corporate function.Which is a bit like taking coals to Newcastle..taking an ABBA tribute to Scandinavia.

Meanwhile Brainscape are in sunnier climes playing a military event for the troops. They arrive back in the UK tomorrow for a series of UK nighclub , Christmas function bookings (including a big one for PWC) and a wedding.

We have several other acts playing overseas next week including some exciting news about a major Romanian TV show which we will be supplying an Elvis and a Sinatra Tribute for….great news both for the acts and for LMM.

The name of the show is “InTrecerea Anilor” (roughly translated as “The Contest of the years”). This is an international format owned by Endemol which airs under names like “I Migliori Anni” (Italy) or “Les Annees Bonheur” (France) and it will be filmed in the TVR Studios. This show is currently the biggest show in Europe so its a big deal(think X Factor scale viewing figures in the host country.)We will blog more about this next week.

…air miles boys and girls….save those air miles!!!

Electric Mayhem Etc Defy The Weather Gods

Sunday, December 5th, 2010

The weather has created some big challenges for many of our live bands and DJs this week but as the start of the Christmas entertainment season coincided with the sudden arctic conditions our function bands and mobile DJs rose to the challenge.

Alan Fletcher, AKA Neighbours star Dr Karl Kennedy, has been touring the UK with fantastic party band Lucas and managed to brave the snow in order to get to the Walkabout venues throughout the UK where he was booked to perform. The many students and other fans who witnessed his performances so far this week have been blessed with a great show made all the more special for the extraordinary lengths that both the band and the sound engineers had to go to in order to make the events happen.

We have had DJs digging cars out to get to gigs (in some cases picking up other DJs who were stranded at home by the snow) and bands setting off ridiculously early in order to provide that special wedding entertainment or Christmas party music.

All of our nightclub acts (both live bands and DJs) managed to make their shows despite the weather.

But off all the entertainers making special efforts this week I think first prize must go to Electric Mayhem who made a gruelling cross Europe trip by van in order to play at a Christmas ball over in Germany. The snow in Europe wasn’t much better than before the got on the ferry but they soldiered on and made the gig and everyone had a great time.

LMM would like to officially thank all our acts for their proffessionalism and for their determination in making their bookings a success….I know how difficult this weather has been myself as I have spent all day digging out my car and trudging to the supermarket with a sledge to caryy my groceries back on!!

Enjoy the Electric Mayhem video….they really are a great band.If you are looking for a band for an event or wedding then look no further.
