Walkabout Saturday Night With Resume Street Dance Crew

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

Saturday nights at Sheffield Walkabout are usually about the great live bands and DJ Lenny pumping the biggest, choice anthems but with the Champions League final between Barcelona and Manchester United we had to change things around a little bit on May 28.

As the huge cinema style big screen drops down in front of the stage and with sure knowledge that the big match would not be finishing until past ten pm we had no choice but to cancel the live band last Saturday. There just simply wouldn’t be the opportunity and time to sound check them with the well attended match eating into so much of the nights proceedings.

We had a bit of a head scratch.

We still wanted to offer our regulars some spectacular entertainment and give something a little extra to the 800 or so people who were attending to see the Champions League final.

In the past we have put drummers and trumpeters in the balcony to give the feeling of being in the stadium at a massive event.

This time we decided to put a street dance crew on stage.

Sheffields number one street dance crew (and if anyone disputes this can it be resolved with a dance off rather than fisticuffs at dawn?) are Resume and so they were good enough to work up a routine which fitted nicely into half time and another routine for the end of the match.

Thanks to Resume for doing a great job on Saturday.

We look forward to working with you again in the future.

The video above doesnt have great sound quality and was taken on a mobile phone at the end of the night but you get a feel for the crew in action.

Volcanic Ash Doesn’t Stop Plan B From Flying (This Time!)

We turned on the TV a few days ago and, like many other viewers, thought that we were watching an anniversary news programme.Surely the volcanic ash cloud wasn’t back?

April 2010 saw flights grounded due to Iceland’s volcanic ash.Plan B (the great party band, not the rapper from Forest Gate) were due to fly out to Romania for a two date tour and Front Cover were over in Cyprus performing a week of dates.Front Cover got stuck over there which was no bad thing as they picked up another week of shows but poor old Plan B never got off the ground and their tour was cancelled.

Skip forward a year and its a severe case of deja vu.

Front Cover are again over in Cyprus doing a series of shows and Plan B are yet again due over in Romania for a two date tour taking in Bucharest and the Black Sea Coast.Luckily this year Plan B have got off the ground and if my calculations are right they should be landing in Romania about now having caught a red eye flight from Luton in the middle of the night.

The past year has seen both acts go from strength to strength and play some fantastic shows, both private and public,to great acclaim.

If you are looking for a quality party duo in London then Front Cover ought to be close to the top of your wishlist and Plan B are one of the finest female fronted party bands in the UK.

Both are available from the LMM “stable of stars.” Telephone 08454 900515 or email info@lmmuk.com for details.

Review Of Adam Ant At Sheffield O2 Academy May 24 2011

Adam Ant On Stage

Adam Ant On Stage

Before anyone starts thinking we have gone all retro let me point out that the last gig we went to was the NME tour with cutting edge acts Everything Everything,Magnetic Man,Crystal Castles and The Vaccines…so there!

Despite the admirals hat,the face paint, the cumberband, fingerless gloves and the military jacket that Adam Ant was wearing last night at the Academy there was no sign of the mental illness which has laid him low for the best part of ten years. In fact he was in such rude health it was as if he had sent a thirty year old Johnny Dep to understudy him.Ant strutted onto the stage of the Sheffield o2 Academy chewing gum, spitting out rock and roll attitude and looked every inch the pop star that we remembered him as.

Adam Ant was true to the punk roots which many of the 40 and 50 something audience had come to see, if the thinning flat tops and desultory mohicans on display were anything to go by, and much of the set focused on forgotten tracks like Car Trouble and Deutche Girls which havent bothered any radio playlists for a long while. The fan worship was such that when a lady collapsed in front of us her husband stayed in the middle of the crowd doing the “Ant People Dance” whilst she struggled to the back of the audience to get some air.

Clearly some of the people present had “unplugged the jukebox” several years ago and should have probably been watching Morse with a cocoa by the time he took to the stage. We wondered whether the 50 year old guy stood on his own in full Ant regalia including face paint and jacket had made this style decision back in 1981, and stuck with it since, or had he dressed up especially for the night.Such was the goodwill amongst other fans who had endured minor face painting jobs that he was employed most of the night for photos by groups of lady fans.

If you were to put together  a top ten list of the strangest sonic sounds to hit number one in the UK Laurie Andersons “Oh Superman” would probably head it but there would be sure to be a couple of Adam Ant tunes in there.Tracks like “Goody Two Shoes” with its multiple chord changes and “Prince Charming” with its repeated chorus and strange chants are not conventional hits .This is not straight ahead rock n roll.Adam Ant,though,is a great frontman with his unique ticks and moves, his sly grins and winks, his tongue in cheek swaggering dance.Perhaps if he had embraced a straight ahead rock style he would have wowed them at Live Aid and continued his run of number ones..probably not.

His music is pop at its best with its throw away tracks hitting the moment and then buried for thirty years rarely heard on radio or TV and never acknowledged in the Music press until re earthed for nostalgia shows like last nights.

Adam Ant-We Salute You.

Support last night was from Dressed For Pleasure and a band fronted by the girl who Russel Brand and Jonathan Ross got into bother about…..you know the one,her Grandad was Manuel.

Happy 70th Birthday To Bob Dylan From The LMM Team.

Happy Birthday Bob Dylan

Happy Birthday Bob Dylan

I have invented a very tenuous link to work for this blog just to give us an excuse to say 70th Happy Birthday to Bob Dylan.

Bob Dylan is musical marmite. You either love or loathe him. There is no inbetween.

Even for kids of the 1960s when Dylan invented the rule book for intelligently written song poems, and it could be argued pretty much created rock music, (as opposed to the “pop” which came before him) there were lots of people who didnt get on with his weird voice or his “songs with too many words” (as one friend of mine described them.)

At 20 years old Dylan sang like a wise old man,a traveller, the lonesome hobo  he had portrayed himself as.

By the time I saw him live ten years ago at Manchester Apollo the voice and the phrasing had reached such an extreme that my missus, who likes but does not love the mans music, asked as Dylan was half way through the first song “Do you know this one?” To which I had to reply “Yep…its All Along The Watchtower!”  “I would not have recognised that” she said.

So even for fans Dylan can be a challenge (as anyone who has struggled through some of his lesser albums will attest to) but there is no song writer who can compete with the incredible run of songs that Dylan has written.Memorable classics across several decades covered by hundreds of artists.Albums like Blood On The Tracks,Highway 61 Revisited,Blonde On Blonde,Desire,Time Out Of Mind,Oh Mercy,Another Side Of etc etc are all albums I have lived with and loved for years.

My Auntie bought me Desire when I was first learning acoustic guitar aged thirteen and when I was fourteen and had a Saturday job in a pub I used to buy a Dylan album pretty much every week.I remember walking to Sheffields Bradleys Records on Chapel Walk in foot deep snow to buy Freewheeling.

The Dylan Biograph Boxed set cd is just about the best compilation CD you can buy.

Treat yourself its only £12 on Amazon!

It was the first boxed set to be done properly with a greatest hits and perfect unreleased gems. The first of the Bootleg series is three CDs choc full of unreleased songs which most musicians would have based a carear around.

Anyway I am a fan and just wanted to take some time to say Happy Birthday to Bob Dylan.

How am I going to relate this to work?

Adele is hugely popular and several brides and grooms have chosen her cover of Dylans ” Make You Feel My Love” as their first dance.A few have asked LMM bands to play and sing a version of it.Overs have chosen this song for a DJ to play. Its a beautiful song and one which stopped me in my tracks the first time I heard it (sung by Garth Brooks as Dylans version had somehow passed me by during a period when I was not listening to much Bob Dylan.) Not everyone would realise that its a Bob Dylan song but they would all recognise that its a moving piece of music and from the many cover versions on shows like the X Factor and American Idol it appears its one which lots of people want to sing.

A few months ago I went with a friend to see his daughter, who is eleven, having her piano lesson. She sang us “Make You Feel My Love” and played piano along with her singing.

I’m pretty much a born cynic but it was it was a lovely moment.

Happy Birthday Bob Dylan.

Booking Entertainment For Weddings At Londons Iconic Gherkin Building

Entertainment For The Gherkin

Entertainment For The Gherkin

Certain venues tend to crop up time and time again when you are booking one off events and weddings for private clients. There are some beautiful and renowned barns and stately homes, some high end hotels and a few quirky venues which stick in our minds and when someone calls or emails the office with an enquiry for an event at these we are able to state without even looking on our data base that we have supplied acts there before.

LMM hold information about any venues we have booked bands or DJs into in the past and so we are often able to help with any client queries about the suitability of a particular act in a particular venue.Obviously some venues have quirks or certain requirements which it does help to iron out with info gained from previous bookings.

We have had the great pleasure of supplying a number of bands and  to The Gherkin which along with St Pauls and The Houses Of Parliament has become one of the iconic London buildings dominating the skyline around the Thames.

The first booking we got for a wedding in the Gherkin we were able to arrange for an LMM staff member to do a walk around and site visit in order to work out the logistics of supplying a band and DJ.He met with a very helpful member of the events team at The Gherkin who was able to show him where acts set up and where the load in was etc.

We have now supplied several acts to events at the Gherkin and have a handle on what to expect etc at this brilliant venue.

It’s always exciting for a band or DJ to perform at one of these wonderful and original venues and when we called Soul Dedication who are a great funky party band with details of a booking at the Gherkin later this year they were very enthusiastic.

If you are looking to hire entertainment for a wedding or event at an unusual venue please call the LMM office you may find that we have experience which can help you with your booking.08454 900515 or info@lmmuk.com

So Here It Is-Merry Xmas!

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

Merry Xmas (but its only May!!)

Christmas has arrived in the LMM office.

The LMM office is buzzing with talk of Christmas as our hotel and events clients begin booking up their Xmas programmes of DJs and bands.

It seems a little weird to be talking about Christmas and New Years Eve bookings when it’s not even June but most Hotels have their brochures printed by now (or are at least finalising their programme) and so we are planning the busy Xmas period entertainment at the minute for a core of key clients.Yesterday I was making a repeat  booking for a Piper in full dress for a Manchester Hotel and it struck me how all the Xmas stuff seems to be coming in right now.

We have had meetings and secured Xmas bookings with several hotels already and look forward to the opportunity of quoting and securing some more work over the next weeks and months.

We have a very exciting schedule of Xmas party entertainment being planned for the Highlight venues which will be announced shortly. We completed a programme of Tribute acts and DJs for a Manchester hotel yesterday. We booked out a swing band for a New Years eve dinner dance at a Golf Club yesterday.

If you are looking for Xmas entertainment,DJs or bands for a hotel please call the LMM office line on 08454 900515 for favourable rates.

Busy times.

I have suggested to the team in the office that we put a Christmas tree and some tinsel up but as they sat there in shorts and T shirts they refused.

Bah Humbug.

What Is The Worst Thing That Can Happen?

Union Jack Band

Union Jack Band

Something terrible happened on Saturday night but as bad as it is many of our bands and DJs will recognise the scenario as lots of people have experienced the same (or similar.)

Union Jack arrived at Sheffield Walkabout, opened the back of the van and then had the horrible realisation that key parts of their equipment had been stolen while the van was in lock up.

When the band leader called me he was,by his own words,”feeling sick with shock.”

It looks like the thieves may have got away with several thousands worth of top quality equipment including drums shells, snare, bass drum pedals, guitar pedals and a set of lights.

The first thing that was on the bands mind was how to make the show happen. They were due on stage in around 90 minutes and we somehow had to borrow, beg or hire some drum gear to get the band up to scratch.

As Mick called a few places I picked up the phone and called Practice Sheffield and a guy called Warren, who we don’t know from Adam ,immediately offered some gear at a very cheap price and so I would like to officially and very publicly thank the guys at http://practicesheffield.co.uk/  for their help and suggest that if anyone needs a rehearsal room in Sheffield they pop down to this place and give some love back.

Union Jack are a brilliant band and a great bunch of guys who we have known for a long time (way back in the late 90s we came across them playing in Yorkshire and we have been booking them ever since,Mick from Union Jack has even been to a few gigs with me popping off to see Brian Wilson and Paul McCartney in concert as we both share a love of great song writers) and so we knew they would overcome the shock of having their gear stolen and put on a good show with borrowed gear which is exactly what they did.

Many bands will recognise the scenario of having a vital piece of equipment stolen at a gig or from a lock up.It even happened to my Dad back in 1963 when he returned from a gig and unloaded his Hofner Violin bass into the house. When he returned to his car parked in a suburban street five minutes later someone had pinched an amplifier and a box of 45s.The street was deserted.

Lets hope that Union Jack manage to retrieve the gear which was stolen. If anyone has any information on gear which meets the description above for sale in the Bradford area please get in touch with us.

Andy Oliver Photography Blog

Friday, May 13th, 2011

We got sent a link to Andy Olivers Photography blog last night. This is a new blog and you should check it out if you are interested in hiring a photographer or if you just want to see some great photos.

Andy Oliver is a long time friend of LMMs and is a photographer who works at weddings and commercial photography. He is based in Nottingham shire.

If you check out his bog here http://andyoliverphotographyblog.com/2011/04/23/newark-castle-fireworks-2/  you will see the most amazing and dramatic photograph.Andys studio is based near Newark Castle and when the Castle was lit by fireworks he took a picture which looks like something from a CGI movie.Check the photo out it’s incredible.

We can heartily recommend Andy Oliver Photography as a reliable, professional quality wedding or family photographer.

He did some amazing shots of my family a while ago which take pride of place in frames around the house and which I gaze at for a few minutes every day.

The reason why I have posted the Nat King Bing video above?

Thats because Andy also did the great shots of the Nat King Bing band featured in the jazz section of the LMM website.

Front Cover- Really Nice Testimonial

Front Cover Testimonial

Front Cover Testimonial

We have copied in full the lovely email which came from a recent client who booked Front Cover. There was some doubt about whether Front Cover were able to perform at this function because they were due to fly back to Australia to get married shortly after. However upon hearing what the celebration was all about the band made some special efforts to make the date….the rest is covered in this email which we are very pleased to have received.

FRONT COVER PERFORMANCE ON 2ND APRIL 2011

Hi Alex

On Wednesday 9 February 2011, following hours of listening to artists from various companies on the web, I had decided upon Front Cover to perform live for us at our local Memorial Hall, in celebration of our joint 50th Wedding Anniversary and my 70th birthday on 2nd April 2011. After our conversation, you contacted me again to say that the duo Front Cover were returning to their native Australia on the 5th April (nb this was to attend their own wedding back in Aus) and may not be able to attend.  Later, you contacted me again, and confirmed that they would like to come, saying it was an omen that we had been together for 50 years.

What a brilliant talented couple they are! Engaging with their audience, they gave us a magnificent performance, which started in a relaxed mellow way while people talked and the food was served. Then they followed with song after song and superb instrumental accompaniment. The guitar solo was breath-taking. Everyone was dancing the night away including one aged eight and two aged eighty.

Our guests did not want to let them go cheering ‘encore, encore’, but they had a long way to go home. I hope they both have a long and happy marriage – they make a great couple and a team in perfect harmony.

You’ve probably guest that I would certainly recommend them to anyone organising a big celebration.

Who knows, perhaps I’ll have them again for my 80th birthday.

Kind regards

Pat Ashburner

Thank You For The Thank Yous!

Flashback Play 80s Music

Flashback Play 80s Music

It goes without saying that LMM value and encourage feedback from our clients. Our weekly entertainment report from the High Street venues we supply helps to paint a picture about the quality of DJs and bands and we ask for (and receive) lots of feedback from private clients both through our website, via phone calls, email and online.

One thing we do love at LMM is to hear from our acts about venues and events. From time to time we ask bands to fill in feedback report forms and we hold meetings with DJs on a six monthly basis to get ideas and feedback. We also recieve emails and calls about shows on a regular basis. This is all great and helps us to run the business efficiently and get best results at shows.

Of course much of the feedback is about the day to day nitty gritty.Maybe problems with a mixing desk or feedback about a new idea for a night.

Occasionally we just get a call or an email out of the blue just to thank us for putting an act into a particularly brilliant show.

We received three such bits of feedback over the weekend. The Hoops arrived in Blackpool for the Young Farmers event, saw the size and quality of the PA system and the 5,000 strong audience and spontaneously called one of the LMM guys up to say “thanks for putting us into this awesome gig.”

Likewise both DJ MR T and Flashback sent messages of thanks after having had such a fantastic time at the Skegness 80s weekender.

So thank you for the thank yous…we are always thrilled when we get any job, better still an exciting and different opportunity its nice to know that our acts feel the same way.
