LMM Attend The Opening Of Masseys Book Store City Bar In Leeds

Masseys Book Store Opens In Leeds

Move over Mojo there’s a new kid in town!

That town is Leeds and the new kid is a brand spanking new bar called Masseys Book Store City Bar.Built on the site of the original historic Masseys Book Store on Cookridge Street in Leeds Masseys is set to be the place to be for hip young gun slingers and trend setters in the area.

The decor is eclectic (to say the least) with lamps made out of boots and tape machines, dentist chairs (or are they hairdressers chairs?),gym horses as lean tos,a mural of a Regency dining scene and twig bestrewn pillars with fairy lights. Its a bit like being in a really cool junk shop and the overall effect works brilliantly giving it a rock n roll feel whilst still offering style and comfort.A place to see and be seen without being too posey.

There’s a great selection of decent priced cocktails and beers and a small selection of bar snacks.

The ambient music was like a really well loaded Ipod on random shuffle with Curtis Mayfields Pusherman following Led Zeppelins Achilles Heel following Zero 7 following some chilled house which I didn’t recognise.Great music guys.

Last night was the pre opening party and LMM were there along with some of our DJs.DJ Johnny Love and George Germaine strolled in looking too cool for school whilst Nottingham Rock City regular Jim Brown looked like he’d just arrived back from Glastonbury.Mad Matt arrived from Blackpool for a swift cocktail.

Tonights opening night will feature  live musicfrom emerging Leeds bands and some of Leeds best underground DJs.There will be open mic nights on the stage over the next few months offering emerging acoustic acts in Leeds a good live platform.

If you are in Leeds pop into Masseys it’s literally a one minute walk up the street from the O2 Academy. You can’t miss it.You can’t afford to!

Top Ten DJs Of All Time

Top Ten DJs Of All Time

Top Ten DJs Of All Time

For some a DJ is just a bloke who plays records and to some extent this is true but there are several DJs who have shaped and changed the world (or at least the music world) and today LMM salute these individuals for whom Faithless could have written “God Is  A DJ!”

The LMM Top Ten DJs Of All Time (in no particular order)

1.Alan Freed

This 1950s American DJ is widely (but almost certainly wrongly) credited with first using the term rock n roll to describe the new emerging sounds.Died penniless after a payola scandal.

2.Graham Parke

House music pioneer who never got the overground success or credit that many of his peers achieved. One of the first DJs to play house music in the UK.

3.Jimmy Saville

Many of you reading this will be surprised at Savilles inclusion in this list but whether you are a cutting edge dance music DJ or a cheesy party jock you owe Jimmy Saville a debt.He was the first DJ in the UK to use twin turntables and a microphone (back in 1947!!!)

4.John Peel

Savilles Radio One chum has probably broken more cutting edge bands and music genres than anyone else in the UK although listening to his show was often a chore (he appeared to like almost anything that was “different” to the mainstream which sometimes led to him championing rubbish bands.)Peel deserves the position he holds in British culture. His autobiography is pretty good too.

5.DJ Kool Herc

Kool Herc invented the break beat by playing two copies of the same funky record and running them together on twin turntables.

6.Grandmaster Flash

Invented “scratching” on vinyl…hey all this scratching is making me itch!

7.Africa Bambaataa

Took the Kool Herc sound and pushed the boundaries thus pioneering many of the techniques and styles which are still to the fore in Hip Hop today.

8.Francis Grasso

The first DJ to beat match (a technique used by club and party DJs to this day.)

9.Frankie Knuckles

US dance music pioneer.House music is named after the fact that Frankie Knuckles played his gigs at warehouse parties and a venue called the Warehouse.

10.DJ Jim Brown

The first UK DJ to mix The Cheeky Girls “Don’t Be Shy (Touch My Bum)” with Faith No Mores “Epic” in a genre slashing mash up which took the UK city centre night life scene by storm.A pioneer of cross cutting his most dangerous mix is widely regarded as the night he played The Wurzels “Combine Harvester” straight after Pendulum….a mix which resulted in a standing ovation from a room full of Young Farmers. Jim is a genius in his field and acknowledged master of the cutting edge style known as “random” Admired by his peers and worshipped as a God by legions of students and fans Jim continues to “mix a lot” in the UKs top venues.(by the way this one is just a mickey take to see if anyone is reading!)

So there you go….if you have any suggestions for DJs I left off the list please do let me know.

If you are looking to book a great party DJ you can call 08454 900515 or email info@lmmuk.com

DJ Mr T At Butlins Bognor Regis Ultimate 80s Weekender

Friday, June 24th, 2011

I Aint Going On No Plane Fool!!

This weekend is all about the event, the spectacle, the big wedding, the festival. The fun!

As we mentioned earlier this week several LMM acts are travelling to Glastonbury either for business or pleasure this weekend.DJ Mr T is off to the Butlins Bognor Regis  Ultimate 80s weekend, a sold out event with several thousands of mad for it 80s fans.

The 80s weekenders at Butlins are a great experience. Many of the fans come dressed up in 80s costume with shoulder pads and eyeliner, guys in Adam Ant costume and women dressed like Madonna. Its really good fun and ,unlike Glastonbury, you can wander back to a comfy chalet when you’ve had enough or you want to take the party indoors!Of course all the entertainment is happening on inside stages and so you’ve no chance of getting trench foot or pneumonia!

DJ Mr T has played at several Butlins 80s weekends in 2011 and is proving popular with the regular attendees and the live acts. If you are nipping along to this weekends 80s event you will find him working on several stages across the arenas and I am sure he would be happy to have a chat with you about your favourite 80s tune.MR Ts facebook page has been swamped with requests already for both this weekend and the weekenders coming up later in the year.

You will have gathered that DJ Mr T gained his nickname for a resemblance to the great A Team heroe from the 80s so you will have no trouble recognising him….he is going to be wearing the full MR T regalia this weekend behind the decks.

Besides his resemblance to Mr T DJ Kev as he also know does a great job for LMM and for our clients.

If you are off to an event this weekend have a great time.LMM will be partying too!

The Top Ten Dance Crazes Of All Time

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011

Strike A Pose-Lets VogueWhat if the hokey cokey really is “what it’s all about?”

The Twist is 50 years old this year and in celebration of the anniversary of this dance craze LMM bring you the top ten dance crazes of all time (in no particular order!) NB.Note to DJs…many of these songs should not be played ever as they induce spontaneous and quite ridiculous dance moves in an audience.

1.The Twist

Its the grandaddy of them all.Hard to believe but before the Twist hit the charts back in 1961 couples always danced together often in a formal routines. The twist gained popularity in venues like the Peppermint Lounge in New York and after being taken up by celebs crossed the Atlantic.

2.The Birdie Song

Beloved by 8 year olds and 80 year olds The Birdie song is still a favourite at both kids parties and old age pensioners events.

3.Aga Doo

We should simply say Aga Don’t to Aga Do the Black Lace monstrosity which gets played in cheesy seaside fun bars at all inclusive resorts to this day.

4.Superman

Black Laces second appearance on the chart.Superman (for those who dont know) has instructions for various things the dance floor should do….kind of like Simple Simon says. To see a massive night club dancefloor following these instructions to the letter as I had the misfortune to see back in the 80s is a thing of wonder.Scary and makes you realise that humans will do just about anything en masse if an authorative voice (or a bloke in oversized specs) tells them to.

5.The macarena

With a vaguely Latino beat this is the dance beloved of saucy aunts and girls out on the town. Its surprisingly popular in Eastern Europe and Brazil as we found out when one of our LMM DJs played it at a London mid week club night aimed at these nationalities.

6.The Charleston

From the 1920s and conjuring up images of flapper girls and the jazz age its the great, great gandaddy of them all.

7.Cha Cha Slide

DJ Casper and his cha cha slide. The first time the LMM team saw a room moving in unison to this track was in Middlesborough Jumpin Jacks just before Middlesborough Walkabout opened. We were searching for DJs in the area and the DJ in Jumpin Jacks played this tune several months before it landed on UK shores. We were pretty impressed that he had taught the whole club the dance moves. It was cheesier than cheddar but in a good way.

8.Oops Upside Your Head

Whoever first decided to sit down and row to this pretty average funk song was a genius. Its meant that Oops Upside Your Head has remained in the publics minds long after the Gap Band are largely forgotten.

9.The Music Man

From the kings of the bad dance,Black Lace,The Music Man has its roots in a folk song dating back to the 1800s. Still popular at kids discos (and with pensioners!)

10.YMCA

Play this song and the dancefloor finds it hard to resist doing the YMCA bit.Its drilled into us from an early age like an essential part of our heritage despite it being about the New York bath house scene in the 70s.

So there we have it.

The LMM top ten dance crazes.

Of course there are many more from the Loco Motion to the Mashed Potatoe,Voguing to Single Ladies (put a ring on it.) Feel free to add to the list if you are in the mood.

LMM Acts Head Off To Glastonbury

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011

So another Glastonbury has come around and LMM have a number of acts heading off down to the Somerset fields either to play or work or  just to enjoy the experience.

The Glastonbury weekend is often one where we find a number of our sound engineers in demand to man some of the smaller stages or to help with production for various bands and we are aware of a number of musicians playing with up and coming acts who will be travelling to Glastonbury for showcase gigs.

Our contemporary harpist will be playing the Croissant Neuf stage in the Greenfields area.Mark has played Glastonbury for several years now and is in demand with his harp covers of pop, indie, rock and RNB tunes.

Besides playing at festivals Mark plays many weddings, parties, drink receptions and corporate events and can be booked by calling the LMM office on 08454 900515 or by emailing info@lmmuk.com

My favourite Glastonbury story involves an aquaintance of mine that I bumped into on a street in Sheffield the day after he arrived back from Glasto. As we talked a car went past which was covered in fur,had large  ears on top and whiskers at the front and was driven by a man in a mouse suit (it was, obviously, some kind of promotional vehicle.) Without missing a beat my pal said,”That my friend is nothing…you should see what I have just seen at Glastonbury!”

If you are traveling to Glastonbury this week either as a player or as a happy participant in the unique atmosphere at this festival then have a great time, hope the weather holds up. If you end up watching didge players in the healing fields rather than U2 on the main stage remember its all part of the experience.

LMM Beatles Tribute Booked For Romanian Show

Tuesday, June 21st, 2011
Love The Beatles Tribute Live

Love The Beatles Tribute Live

Our great Beatles tribute “Love The Beatles” will be travelling across to Romania for a one off show this Wednesday.

Love The Beatles are no strangers to overseas tour dates having toured extensively across Europe in the past ten years. Here in the UK they combine private events like weddings, corporate events and club dates with high profile theatre shows like this years ticketed event at the o2 Indigo which sold out!

LMM have sent dozens of bands over the past five years to our partners over in Romania and every single band arrives back in the UK with fantastic feedback about the generous hospitality they receive and the sheer professionalism of the team over there. We were lucky enough to supply an Elvis and a Sinatra tribute act for one of the most watched programmes on Romanian television on Christmas day so we really have had some great experiences with acts supplied over there. Our George Michael tribute was mistook for the real George Michael when performing at a car launch in Bucharest and featured on the evening news. When we sent a Michael Jackson tribute to perform in a shopping centre he created hysteria.

If you are looking for a Beatles Tribute for an event then give LMM a call on 08454 900515 or email info@lmmuk.com

”Love The Beatles” are brilliant as indeed are the other Beatles bands we have chosen to represent.

At LMM we are big Beatles fans so we would only book out the best Beatles Tributes available.

What Makes A Great Garden Party?

The Slogan on My Shirt At The Garden Party

The Slogan on My Shirt At The Garden Party

With the longest day upon us and the (usually) decent weather June is the perfect month for a garden party and the start of the season of outdoor weddings and events.

This weekend just past the LMM team went to two garden parties (actually both at the same house….Friday went so well they invited everyone back for Saturday!!) and so I wanted to take this opportunity to offer a massive thank you to our friends and neighbours for inviting us to their birthday party (and for putting on such a fantastic event) and also whilst the garden party is fresh on my mind just to outline what makes a night like this special….and believe me it was special both my eleven year old and nine year old commented during the night how lucky we were to have such lovely neighbours and the eleven year old sat by the fire at Midnight as a band played in the background said “I really like this…I’ll remember tonight forever.”

You cant get better praise than that.

What makes a great garden party?

Good food and plenty of drink.

Our event had a fantastic hog roast with a local farmers rare breed pig and luckily another neighbour works for a brewery so we had a cask of real ale amongst other drinks provided by the generous host.

Entertainment.

We were spoilt with a skiffle band starting the night off followed by a live band from Brighton.

Something spectacular .

Again we were spolit for choice. The party came to a climax with a spectacular fire juggling display which left everyone speechless. There was also a massive bonfire which provided a beautiful centrepiece to the evening.Theres something about a big fire to sit and get warmed by…just watching the flames is an event in itself.

Something Funny

Everyone at the party had a white t shirt with a slogan about the host.We kept them hidden i n bags or under jackets and then we revealed them at the given moment. The next half hour was spent wandering around looking at everyones slogan…the kids especially loved it.

Candles and lights.

Fairy lights strewn across trees, tea lights on tables, little battery operated lights which change colour along walls. They all added to the ambience.

Citronella!!!

Make sure you have some mosquito repellent oils or candles….its amazing how many times you can get bitten after dark on a warm summers evening without something to drive the little beasties away.

Great Company

You can’t hire this in but at the end of the day its friends and family that make a night special….thanks again to our friends for making Friday and Saturday so memorable and going to such trouble. The occasion was to celebrate a birthday but we got (and the hosts partner got) a big shock towards the end of the night when the host got down on one knee and proposed to his partner of ten years. It was a fantastic moment and led to them having another party on Saturday night where myself and another neighbour brought out the guitars and sang Oasis,Beatles,Springsteen,Ami Winehouse etc until the early hours.

We are already looking forward to the wedding!!!!

The Hoops Party Band-Helpful,Brilliant Musicians,Great Vocals.

The Hoops Wedding And Party Band

The Hoops Wedding And Party Band

What makes a great party band?

It goes without saying that they have to be able to play their instruments well and have great vocals.

What else does a great party band need?

They need a good set list which will work for any kind of audience and get everyone dancing and singing along

Is that it?

No they need to be professional and turn up on time.

They need good equiptment which won’t let them down.

They need the right insurance and PAT certificates.

They need to be able to “read a crowd” and play the right songs and not just go through their routine

They need to have passion and enthusiasm for their jobs.

They need to be helpful to both their agent and the client.

They need to be nice people.

The Hoops have all this and more and the email below from a client yesterday backs up our statement perfectly.

“Hi Rick,

I just wanted to let you know how fantastic The Hoops were at our wedding on the 21st of May.  They were so professional and easy to work with.  They turned up at the venue and were set up in the blink of an eye.  The dance floor was full all night and when the security guards cut the night a little short everyone was still asking for more.  An amazing band with a brilliant repertoire that was loved by all my guests as much as it was by me.  A really tight and great sounding band, I would recommend them to absolutely anyone.  Wonderful.

Thanks
Emma”

If you are looking for a great female fronted party band in the South Of England then The Hoops might just be the band for you.Call 08454 900515 or email info@lmmuk.com for details

Nottingham University Cripps Hall Ball

Thursday, June 16th, 2011
Nat King Bing At The Cripps Hall University Ball

Nat King Bing At The Cripps Hall University Ball

A great big thank you to the ladies and gentlemen of Nottingham University Cripps Hall for their gracious hospitality last night at their Uni Ball.

LMM were there with Nat King Bing who had been booked to provide some walk on music whilst the student awards were given out followed by their set of rock and pop covers played in a jazz style.

The Cripps Hall ball was a beautiful, stylish affair with everyone in evening dress and looking their absolute best.

It was held at Colwick Hall Hotel on Racecourse Road which advertises itself as Nottinghams best kept secret.Certainly, and despite having spent a great deal of time in the Nottinghamshire area with friends and family,I had never heard of it before.

Colwick Hall is a  fantastic venue.A grand old country house hotel on the banks of a lilly pad lake it was a splendid setting for a Summers evening of good food, great company and jazz swing music.

The students took to the dancefloor to dance with partners which is something only jazz swing music really encourages and with the black tie affair it seemed appropriate to hear the band playing Sex Is On Fire and Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor in a jazz style. There may even have been a couple of proper salsa dancers amongst the students because we saw some great moves during the Latino version of The Killers “Somebody Told Me.”

Anyway it was a great night last night..hope all the Cripps Hall chaps and chapesses enjoyed it.Thanks again to Carl and the Cripps Hall gang for using LMM and for booking Nat King Bing.

Glossary Of Terms Used By Musicians

Wednesday, June 15th, 2011
Dictionary Of terms used by musicians

Dictionary Of terms used by musicians

Earlier this year LMM were involved in a series of meetings about live music events. There were certain phrases and words which I realised were in common use amongst musicians but meant nothing to the other people in the meetings. In the end we wrote a little glossary of terms which m,ight be useful for Brides and Grooms booking a live band or DJ for the first time or for other people involved with booking a function band for an event or party.

The following are all in common useage by musicians

Backline….drums, bass, guitars ,keyboards ,amplifiers….everything that a band needs except PA system.

PA system   at most shows all the equipment is amplified through the PA system .The PA system also allows the vocals to carry over the instruments.

Monitors  are speakers on stage which allow the singers to hear themselves….other instruments are also fed through them on large stages.

Desk the sound desk is the tool which allows the sound engineer to create the live sound for the band. It will give access to effects like reverb (echo) which are essential for making a band sound good.

Outboard gear ….desk ,microphones ,monitors , microphone stands

Cans  Headphones!

Roadie someone who helps set up and carry the bands gear (not all bands have one but you wouldnt expect to see Coldplay carrying their own gear!)

Sound Engineer  someone whose job it is to make the band sound good, manipulating the levels in order to create the right balance between instruments….this may be a member of the band or at bigger shows it will be a stand alone person.

Green Room AKA Dressing Room  somewhere for the band to get changed.

Rider  an add on to the contract which asks for food or soft drinks (or in the case of  American rock bandVan Halen a bowl of M and Ms with all the brown ones taken out….see also the (possibly not true!!) Rider for Mariah Carey which asked for a puppy dog to be placed in her dressing room!)  Most bands, if they ask for anything at all, will just ask for soft drinks and food.#

Groupie  for fans of the classic Jack Black movie School Of Rock there is a great scene when a little girl asks what her role in the band can be.Jack Black replies “Groupie” The next day she comes into school and says “I googled Groupie and its disgusting!!”

 Don’t google it.

In reality Groupies don’t exist.

Tribute band  band which covers just one act or era..often making efforts to look exactly like the act they are covering

Covers Band/Party Band/Function Band/Wedding Band  all names for bands which cover a range of material.

Bandeoke /Rockaoke  live band karaoke  allowing customers to get up on stage and sing with a live band.

If you can think of any which we missed off please do email/facebook/leave a comment…we value your input.
