Write A Review Of An LMM Band

Thursday, July 28th, 2011

We often take phone calls from clients and ,occasionally, people who have seen one of our bands playing in a venue asking if there is somewhere that they can leave a review of the band.

As part of our range of improvements of the Live Music Management website we now have a review section on each acts page. Clients and interested parties can now leave reviews directly on the acts page giving the act stars out of a five. In time we hope this will be the most accurate party band review system for wedding and function bands available on the Internet. A hugely valuable resource for clients looking to book a band but wanting a second, third or fourth opinion!

We are hugely proud of the great feedback we recieve for our live acts (just this week I was ina meeting with a major booker of live music who proclaimed LMM bands to be the best bands in the UK ) and we hope that our review system is of help to any future brides and grooms, event organisers, party bookers, wedding planners and venue promotors in deciding which act to hire. If in doubt though please do call the LMM office where our knowledge of the live acts on our books will help to steer you in the right direction. We offer free and honest advise.

Our motto is that we would rather lose a sale than sell the wrong act. Its not that catchy but it’s a decent philosophy.

Tramlines Festival And Sheffield Walkabout-Thanks To The Acts And DJs

Hat Trick On Stage At A Recent Event

Hat Trick On Stage At A Recent Event

I had a long conversation with the manager of the Sheffield Walkabout yesterday about this weekend just passed and specifically the Tramlines Festival which took place in the city on Saturday and Sunday.

The Tramlines Festival is a couple of years old now and each year seems to have grown. The main festival on Devonshire Green featured headliners like The Guillemots and Ash whilst opening the main stage on Sunday were my old mates The Everley Pregnant Brothers,a band put together on a whim and for a laugh by Sheffield Artist Pete Mckee  which has in a short space of time started to attract major attention. Beyond the main free stage there were dozens of gigs in other venues including the Walkabout where we had a full weekend of emerging acts playing.

I wanted to take this opportunity to say thanks to the sound engineer,Steve, who does a fantastic job in this venue and has been working there for as long as the venue has been open. His efforts week on week make all the Saturday night bands sound great and on the all day festival on Sunday he had his work cut out to deliver great sound for a large bill of live acts.

I also wanted to thank Hat Trick who played on Saturday doing their party set and then came back on Sunday to finish off the all day event in style with a set of live band karaoke (or Rockaoke as it is sometimes known.) Thanks to these guys for the loan of a drum kit to make the switch over quick during the acts sets on Sunday.

The DJs should be mentioned as they played a massive part in the success of the weekend so cheers to Marc and to Stuart (sadly Lenny the resident DJ was away on holiday.)

Finaly a big thanks to all the acts who played Sheffield Walkabout over the weekend.

When LMM Met Amy Winehouse

Amy Winehouse R.I.P

Amy Winehouse R.I.P

We were at a barbeque on Saturday afternoon when the sad news about AmyWinehouses death filtered through to us and although in some ways her demise was inevitable there was the genuine shock which happens when a public figure passes away unexpectedly.

Conversation touched upon how Amy Winehouse died at the optimum age for rock star legend joining the like of Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Brian Jones and Kurt Cobain who had all died at the age of twenty seven and how it was a tragic waste of a major talent. The acoustic duo we had booked played Valerie in tribute.

I recalled how several years ago two members of the LMM team had come into the office one morning raving about the young singer they had seen and spoken to the evening before.

In the corner of the Cobden Club there was an ordinary looking young girl sat on a bar stool. She sat singing Jazz cover versions with the a voice which astounded my work colleagues . They were full of praise for the jazz phrasing and the outstanding talent. They said “Her names Amy Winehouse and apparently she told us that she has a record deal….we’d better look out for that one…..what an amazing girl.”

I thought long and hard about whether to write about Amys sad death but I couldn’t get that story out of my head all weekend and wanted to share it.

Rest in Peace.

When LMM Booked INXS For Shepherds Bush Walkabout

Live Music Management At Walkabout

Live Music Management At Walkabout

We were looking at a time line yesterday of Live Music Managements activity over the past dozen or so years of booking entertainment into the Walkabout Australian bars. So mnay different things have happened that some of the events have dissapeared into the ether. The timeline had over one hundred different highlights on it but I have just copied a few below.

It was way back in 1996 when LMM Director Timbo started playing in the very first Walkabout.

In 2000 LMM oraganised Rolf Harris 70th birthday party concert at Shepherds Bush Walkabout which was widely covered in the media.

Between 2000 and 2004 when the Walkabouts start opening in various towns LMM roll out a “band on a truck” format for the opening weekends. We put a live band on the back of a flat back truck and with permission from the local council drive them around town promoting the venue by playing the biggest Walkabout anthems. This deserves a blog of it’s own!

2000 to current day….the best in Antipodean talent booked into the Walkabouts including sell out shows for Grimspoon, Ash Grumwald,Kevin Bloody Wilson, The Exponents, Springbok Nude Girls, Just Ginger Mental As Anything, John Stevens etc etc

2001 LMM organise a massive charity event in support of the 9/11 relief fund with the London Fire Brigade giving full support and Aussie celebs like Pat Cash and Jason Donovan performing.

2002 INXS are about to begin a tour of arenas in the UK with Blondie supporting. LMM manage to persuade them to play an acoustic set at Shepherds Bush Walkabout. They agree to play three songs but stay on stage for forty five minutes as the crowd goes wild to see their heroes close up and personal.

2003 LMM introduce Live Band Karaoke (aka rockaoke or bandeoke ) to the UK when we put the format into various Walkabout venues from Scotland down to London and Portsmouth. Spawned many imitators!

2004 LMM Director Rick is cut price Simon Cowell when he gets chosen as a judge on a daytime talent show on ITV.

2004 LMM book dates on  first UK tour for Dr Karl Kennedy which is the biggest student draw of the next few years.

2007 LMM build band around young neighbours star “Stingray” which results in further packed houses.

2008 LMM orgainise Big Day Out Festival which is an all day festival feature the UKs top tribute bands.

2009. The first of several terrible natural disasters hit Australia which leads to LMM organising a massive charity appeal fund raiser for the Australian Bush Fires. Over the next few years we do the same for the New Zealand charities and for the flood appeals.

2009 LMM act Jamie Afro (AKA Jamie Archer) reaches the finals of the X Factor.

2010 Rolling out of party games nights which are hugely successful.

201o LMM book dates on first UK tour for The Blanks.

2011 and beyond….the best in local and national live music booked into the Walkabout venues and the UKs top party DJs playing night after night delivering great memories for city centre party goers.

Christmas Dinner In July? It Must Be The Highlight Xmas Launch!

Highlight Xmas shows

Highlight Xmas shows

Last night I was sat with well over 300 hundred  diners, including a great many Walkabout and Bar Risa managers and head office staff, tucking into a Christmas dinner with all the trimmings watching a drag queen compere dressed in Xmas gear getting the audience into the Xmas spirit whilst Whams Last Christmas played over the PA system.

This wasn’t a surreal dream. It was the Highlight Christmas launch where staff and friends of the Highlight venues are invited to sample what’s in store for this years Xmas shows.

We arrived at the Highlight on Broad Street in Birmingham to be greeted by the aforementioned drag act and a staircase covered in snow and draped in Christmas decorations. A glass of mulled wine was offered to us by friendly staff dressed in festive white whilst a photo opportunity with a reindeer (not a real one!!) and the drag queen was available. We took to our white table cloth seating and had waitresses in attendance to take drink orders. Our Xmas dinners arrived shortly after whilst LMM DJ Ben McClaughlin entertained us with xmas songs and a close up magician strolled around the tables and our drag queen,Jackie Frost ,mingled with the crowds.

The stage show featured comedy and magic and was up to the high standards of the Highlight shows.

The after show disco presented by LLMs DJ Ben ,one of Broad Streets best, was superb.

A great night was had by all.

If you are looking to book your company or a bunch of friends into a Christmas party night then you would do well to look into the Highlight venues as the best value offer in the High Street. You can find details on the Highlight website and you will be pleased to see that Highlight venues are situated in nine major towns.

If you are looking to book other Christmas entertainment please contact the LMM office for help and advice.

The tattoo jam which is being held at Doncaster Racecourse between August 5 and 7 2011 is the UK’s biggest tattoo convention. Tattoo artists and tattoo fans  from allover the world travel to Donny for a weekend of exhibitions and events.

Have You Considered The Full Monty?

The Full Monty

The Full Monty

I drove past Shiregreen Working Mens Club in Sheffield over the weekend. The final scenes of the hit movie “The Full Monty” were filmed there on the big theatre style stage. On the outside of the building now there is a sign declaring it “The home of the full monty.” The sign has probably been there for some time but I don’t drive past it very often and have not noticed it before. It reminded me of what must be one of the most pointless TV interviews of all time which took place between my band and an Italian TV company back in the 1990s.

At the height of “full monty fever” my  covers band took a couple of day time rehearsals in this working mens club (if you play in a band and you have never considered rehearsing in a social club you should do…..they provide a cheap and brilliant rehearsal space.) An Italian TV company turned up to do a piece on the Full Monty which was breaking box office records throughout the world at the time. After filming on the stage they asked permission to interview us for the piece.

The interview went as follows…

Italian TV Presenter

“So you boys have been made out of work by the steel industry closing down, yes?”

Us

No

Italian TV Presenter

“You must have considered the full monty as an option to make your money yes?”

US

“no”

Italian TV Presenter

“Would you be able to demonstrate the full monty on this stage for the benefit of our TV audience back in Italy?”

Us

“definitely no!!!!”

I am sure that many of our bands and DJs have similar weird stories to share with us but this one takes some beating.

For information about great wedding bands please call 08454 900515 or email info@lmmuk.com

Top Ten Hidden Gem Wedding Venues

Top Ten Hidden Gem Wedding Venues

Top Ten Hidden Gem Wedding Venues

There are some magnificent venues which are widely advertised as locations in which to hold weddings and events but there are also some fabulous civic buildings, museums and grand stately homes which are little known as wedding venues and it is to these “hiddden secret” venues which we turn our attention to today.

On Saturday LMM attended a brilliant wedding held in Firth Court which is a Sheffield University building in the heart of the city. Most of the guests there had never been in the venue before and were unaware of its wood panelled grand hall or the tree lined quadrangle at the centre. None of us had heard of its use as a wedding reception venue . Throughout the country there are many of these impressive buildings which don’t seem to advertise the possibilities of hiring them for events and weddings and yet some of them offer better facilities, greater drama and more of a wow factor than traditional venues. Prompted by Saturdays wedding and a contract which was issued yesterday for a wedding to be held in York Museum (in which I have spent many a happy hour) we give you the top ten non traditional wedding venues!

Top Ten Wedding Venues Not Known For Holding Weddings!

1.The National History Museum

2.The Maritime Museum

3.Chatsworth House

4.York Museum

5.Magna Science Centre

6.Marwell Zoo

7.Merchant Taylors Hall

8.Museum Of Garden History

9.The V and A

10.Port Lympne Wild Animal Park

Live Music Management have supplied live cover bands or mobile DJs to weddings or events at all the above. There are dozens more venues we could have picked and throughout the UK there are hundreds of these hidden gems available to hire as the backdrop to your special day. If you are looking for entertainment for your wedding or event and want some advice both on this and about booking an unusual venue we would be happy to speak to you about our experiences. Our office is available on 08454 900515

Thank You-Auditions At Covent Garden Walkabout

Wednesday, July 13th, 2011
Covent Garden Stars

Covent Garden Stars

A big thanks to the solos and duos who attended last nights auditions at Covent Garden Walkabout.

Asking around the LMM office none of us can remember exactly when Covent Garden Walkabout opened. Suffice to say it has to be over fifteen years ago and we have spent many a happy night in there in the intervening years. LMM have booked the entertainment for this great venue since the doors opened and, indeed,in the early years LMM head honcho Timbo played piano and sang in the bar when he first arrived from Australia.

Unique amongst Walkabout bars Covent Garden Walkabout does not employ any DJs. Its live music all the way with Londons best solos and duos playing to packed houses Thursday through to Sunday. Over the years we have had some amazing performers playing residencies in this venue and it has become a rite of passage for the best Antipodean acts to get a “resi” in the “walkie.”

Sadly Jamie Archer (AKA Jamie Afro) no longer graces the Saturday night stage after reaching the finals of the X Factor a few years ago but he regularly pops in to say hi to the other acts and the rest of the team is solid as a rock with the likes of Tim Barton and Front Cover wowing the crowds and getting everyone in the party mood.

I was once told that Covent Garden Walkabout was the busiest bar in Europe per square foot (busy as in bar sales not overcrowding!!!) and at LMM we hold high expectations of our acts to keep the place rocking.

Last nights audtions saw some great solos and duos taking to the stage for a prestige place on the Covent Garden stage. We will post some video in a later blog but in the meantime if you are looking for a solo or duo for you party or wedding then please call the LMM office or email info@lmmuk.com

Likewise if you are a solo or duo and think you have what it takes to rock a packed house then please contact one of the LMM team.
