The Top Ten Best 80s Goth Anthems…Ever!!

Grimly Fiendish

Grimly Fiendish

For those of you not tired of the Halloween theme, and still wanting to keep in a vampire state of mind, we bring you the top ten 80s goth songs……ever.

Why the 80s you may ask?

Two reasons

1.it was the birth of Goth

2.we have an expert in our midst.

Al in the Live Music Management accounts department was a bit of a goth in her youth and although she never sported the pale palour and none more Black look beloved of cider drinking Goths (still to be found skulking around public monuments in every small town in the UK) she retains a fondness for some of the more commercial offerings of the genre.

Goth has moved a million miles and splintered into a thousand sub genres since the 80s period when Leeds was the Goth capitol of the Universe and Robert Smith was an unlikly and reluctant Goth icon but many of the songs below will still be played at a Goth night and when one of our DJs played at a Goth wedding recently he was asked to play many of the tracks listed below (along with some tracks by acts he had never heard of but had already arranged with the bride and groom to have available on the night.)

Even for none Goths this list contains a couple of absolute classics which haven’t dated one bit.

1.Bauhaus-Bela Lugosis Dead

2.The Cure-A Forest

3.Souixsie and The Banshees-Christine

4.The Cult-She Sells Sanctuary

5.Sisters Of Mercy-This Corrosion

6.The Mission-Tower Of Strength

7.All About Eve-Flowers In Her Hair

8.Fields Of Nephilim-Preacher Man

9.The Damned-Shadow Of Love

10. Alien Sex Fiend-Dead And Buried

The Hi Fidels Halloween Themed Set

The Hi Fidels Halloween Themed Set

Back when I was growing up Halloween was one of those strange American customs that you saw in movies and on television shows. It never occurred to my mates to go out asking for candy (even this word borrowed from the States) by knocking on doors and threatening to “trick” them if they didn’t deliver. What an amazing idea!

The first time we ever came across the trick or treat phenonoman was when we were in our early twenties and some kid knocked on the door and threatened “trick or treat.” When we made the mistake of asking him what his trick was he replied “I was thinking about burning your hedge down.”  It was that kind of neighbourhood.

Anyway skip forward twenty years and the UK is Halloween crazy. We haven’t yet reached the levels of celebration that they have in North America (a few years ago I spent Halloween in Canada where it seemed live every second house was made up like a Hollywood film set) but we are getting there.

Tonight I will be out trick or treating with the kids but throughout the UK Live Music Management have DJs playing Halloween themed nights in Walkabout Bars,Bar Risas and Wahoos. We also have a few bands playing at Halloween theme events. It is expected to be one of the biggest trading nights of the year.

If you are working for us tonight have a great time and thanks for your hard work.

If you are out partying tonight…have yourself some fun.

The picture at the head of this page is our great party band The Hi Fidels playing a Halloween special a couple of years ago at Temple Walkabout where almost a thousand students dressed in fancy dress and the band brought the house down with rocked up versions of Ghostbusters etc.

Happy Halloween-Tope Ten Best Halloween Songs

Happy Halloween-Tope Ten Best Halloween Songs

With Halloween less than twenty four hours away many of the Live Music Management DJ and live band team will be preparing a programme of Halloween themed music ready for Halloween events. Here is our latest top ten list as voted for by the office bods at Live Music Management in order to help put together the best Halloween party ever.

Watching last nights Halloween themed X Factor we were amazed by their ability to shoehorn songs into the Halloween theme and we have tried to keep the choice of songs strictly to tunes that have horror themed lyrics. Apologies for the lack of new tracks but we really struggled to think of any. Is it the case that new artists don’t look at Halloween as a great theme for lyrics. Thats a shame especially with Halloween getting bigger in the UK with each passing year.

1.Ray Parker Junior-Ghostbusters

2.Michael Jackson-Thriller

3.Stevie Wonder-Superstition

4.Santana-Black Magic Woman

5.Damian-The Time Warp

6.Bobby Picket-The Monster Mash

7.Creedence Clearwater Revival-Bad Moon Rising

8.Vic Mizzy-Adams Family Theme Song

9.Screaming Jay Hawkins-I Put A Spell On You

10.Billie Holiday/Alison Moyet-Old Devil Called Love Again

The Top Ten Father Daughter Wedding Dance Songs

Tuesday, October 25th, 2011
Father daughter dance songs

Father daughter dance songs

In the USA the father / daughter dance at a wedding is a key part of the evening and as much a part of the wedding tradition as the first dance. Over here in the UK it isn’t such a fixed part of the night and some weddings choose not to have a father / daughter dance or play the event down a little making it a casual intimate moment between father and daughter rather than part of the theatre of the evening.

Live Music Management have got together with our DJ and wedding entertainment planning team and put together the following top ten of the most popular father daughter dance songs. Of course there are songs which mean so much for a family and these are the ones which tend to be given an airing but for those just wanting to choose a nice song the following list may be helpful.

1. (They Long to Be) Close to You The Carpenters

2. A Father Daughter Wedding Song (I’ll Always Be Your Daughter) Lynn Leonti/Jim McShane

3.A Whole New World-Peobo Bryson

4.Always be My Baby Mariah Carey

5.Brown Eyed Girl Van Morrison

6.Celebration Kool & The Gang

7.Because you loved me Celin Dion

8.If this world were mine. Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrel

9.Bridge Over Troubled Water Simon & Garfunkel

10.Butterfly Fly Away Miley Cyrus and Billy Ray Cyrus

Worst Ever Names For Night Clubs And Bars

Monday, October 24th, 2011
The King Of Clubs-Sheffields Peter Stringfellow

The King Of Clubs-Sheffields Peter Stringfellow

The trend in the 21st Century has been to call your night club something elemental like the Luminaire venues Lava  Ignite , Liquid and Oceana or to go for something cool sounding like Gatecrasher , Cream , Space , Aura , Bar Risa , Pasha or Amnesia. Club owners have become very savvy and brand aware and when opening a multi million pound business probably get in all kinds of focus group bods in order to get the name to fit the demographic.

It was not always so!

Here are a list of the top ten worst night club names ever. Its not science. We held no surveys. We shouted across the office for suggestions. You are welcome to suggest names of your own. There is a bit of a Sheffield night club bias…this isn’t because Sheffield has any worse nightclub names than any other provincial town its just my home town and I can remember quite a few corkers from my boyhood.

1.Fannys (nightclub out in the Totley area of Sheffield beloved of BMW drivers)

2.Turn Ups ( Sheffield club …none more 70s)

3. Tramps (London posh gaffe…homeless people not allowed)

4. Barry Nobles Roxy (Again a Sheffield night club…Roxys is a pretty cool, futuristic but strangely retro name but to pre fix it with Barry Noble…that’s just wrong!)

5.Po Na Na

6. Romeo And Juliets (major cheese alert for this 80s Sheffield night spot)

7.Mr Smiths Of Warrington (the home of  cult TV show hit man and her featuring Pete Waterman)

8.NNN Bar (Salisbury bar almost impossible to say when sober never mind if you have had a few)

9.CNBCN (Salisbury bar….I am seeing a pattern here!)

10. Penthouse (visions of a glamorous club but no this was a grotty Rock club in Sheffield and named after the fact that it was on the top floor of a shopping precinct.)

Steps VS The Stone Roses-Which Band Is Best? The LMM Top Ten.

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

stone roses

The big news in the music industry at present is the reformation of two giants of 20th century pop. Both bands were icons for their generation but which comeback tour should you buy tickets for…The Stone Roses or Steps?  LMM have taken a little time out to outline the case for each band.

1. Both bands invented  dance crazes. With The Stone Roses it was the “simian stroll” much loved by Manc front men like Liam Gallagher and Tim Burgess and copied by lads everywhere. The Steps gave us the 5,6,7,8 line dance and the Tragedy wedding dance. So Steps are the clear winners here.

2.Both acts appropriated traditional music and made something of their own with it. The Stone Roses took Olde English favourite folk song, “Parsley Sage Rosemary And Tyme” and made it into album filler “Elizabeth My Dear.” The canny Steps looked across to the USA line dance craze and updated the country sound to give us the mighty 5,6,7,8.

3. Both bands have encountered H in a bathroom (probably!)  Steps

4.The Stone Roses struggled to follow up their classic first album and took five years to come up with Second Coming which had mixed reviews and sold below expectations. Steps knocked out Steptacular in a couple of afternoons and it went 4 x platinum spawning a bunch of hit singles.

5. Steps were the most successful touring act of 2000 whereas The Stone Roses were booed off stage at the Reading Festival due to Ian Browns poor vocals which led to the NME saying”I am The Ressurection was more like The Eternal Cruxification.”

6. When H and Claire left the band stating that they felt Steps had reached their artistic peak   Steps split up. When Manni left The Roses they staggered on with a new drummer. Then John Squires left and they drafted in Simply Reds guitarist to knock out a few more dates. Steps win hands down for integrity.

7.Both bands started out on indie labels…….but they both took the wonga and signed to majors.

8. After The Stone Roses John Squires formed the half decent Seahorses and made a so so album. He then retired from public life (we think!) Renni was never seen or heard of again. Manni joined Primal Scream (hurrah!) and Ian Brown has released six solo albums. Steps have made several TV shows including “Steps To The Stars” giving young people the chance to break into show business (this is nothing like the X Factor by the way.) H and Claire signed a £5 million deal with Warners!

9. Steps are playing tons of shows and tickets are flying out. Stone Roses are playing two mega Manchester dates.

10. Only Steps have been brave enough to cover ABBA…not once but twice.

So there you have it. The facts as they stand are above. Now its time to make your mind up….is the Stones Roses reunion “Fools Gold” or a proper Ressurection ? Is The Steps tour a “tragedy” or is it really “steptacular?”

Booking Entertainment For An Awards Ceremony

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011

Many companies and organisations hold awards ceremonies to reward staff for achievement and recognise exceptional performance in the workplace. Its a format that we are all familiar with from the TV awards ceremonies .

The grandaddy of media awards ceremonies ,The Academy Awards AKA The Oscars, is now in its 84th year and is watched in 200 countries around the world.

At Live Music Management we have a great deal of experience of supplying entertainment to awards ceremonies . We have supplied live function bands to a number of  awards events and DJs to many after show parties.

The structure of the night will differ from event to event but a simple formatt to follow if you are organising an awards based event for your company would be as follows.

Cocktail pianist or background musicians to play as drinks are served and guests arrive.

Live background music to played over dinner by the same musicians (or a slightly larger version of the same act.)

MC or DJ/MC to introduce the people giving out prizes. This section often begins as coffee is served.

Live act to play “stabs” ie walk on pieces as award winners go to the stage to pick up their awards.

After the dinner the band play music to fill the dance floor or DJ takes over the music part of the evening.

Live Music Management have great options for live music and DJ services in all parts of the UK. We also have exciting ideas for making your event extra special like Live Karaoke Bands (AKA Rockaoke or Bandeoke) or pop up musicians (ie musicians hidden around the room ready to pick up instruments and surprise your guests.)

Call the LMM office on 08454 900515 for details.

The band on the video at the head of this page have been used on a few occasions for the prestigious Rugby Man Of Steel awards.

Do You Remember Your First Night Club?

Monday, October 17th, 2011
Was Walkabout your first time?

Was Walkabout your first time?

As thousands of fresher students settle into their routines in towns and cities throughout the UK many of them will be choosing a bar or night club as their home from home for the next three years. Walkabouts or Bar Risas in many major cities will become as familiar to their regular patrons as their front rooms back home and seeing some of the students last week on Live Music Management site visits made me think…..Do you remember your first night club experience?

The names of the clubs changed as the decades went on but the result was the same …a home from home where you could indulge your crazy side, let your hair down and have a great time.

So if you used to drink in Mr Smiths of Warrington, The Leeds Warehouse, Panama Joes in Burnley, Henry Afrikas in Scunthorpe, Josephines in Sheffield, The Limelight in London, Poo Na Na in Lincoln, The Rooftop Gardens in Wakefield, Batley Frontiers or any of the thousands of other drinking holes in the UK we would love to hear from you.

A future blog will feature a list of the crazy names of clubs in the past (and the crazy themes that often went with them) but we would love to hear about the first night club you visited (or indeed was a DJ at.)
