LMM’s panel of experts for this blog included an eleven year old who ,obviously, has never been in a city centre bar or night club but who is so “pop music mad” and on target with her tastes that we felt it would be stupid not to allow her to contribute…her predictions were all pretty in tune with the DJs we spoke to…apart from Cher Lloyds Swagger Jagger which seemed to be high on her hit list but not be on the lips of any of the girls approaching our DJs to make requests…unless you know different?

I got talking to someone in Derby Walkabout earlier this year and he reckoned that Roy Wood (of Wizard fame) lives in the Derby area and keeps a Christmas tree up all year around (you may remember that Wizards big Xmas hit was “I wish it could be Christmas everyday”.) The guy looked wistfully into space,swallowed a mouthful of beer and simply said “he bloody loves Christmas that Roy Wood!!”

The Glam rock era which preceded punk is largely forgotten but it was a great period for the classic three minute pop song. We mainly see the Glam rock era on the Christmas Top Of The Pops repeats featuring the wealth of brilliant Xmas songs from the early seventies…tracks like Slades “Merry Xmas Everybody” and Wizards “Wish It Could Be Xmas Everyday” but Glam rock threw up some brilliant hits that any wedding DJ could throw into a retro set. Besides mobile DJs drawing on the era for inspiration there are more than a few party bands and wedding singers that pull on the Glam rock era for part of their set.

The cost of a band for a wedding can differ enormously from act to act. There are lots of variables which alter the price from location to number of members in the band right through to length of time on site etc etc. Obviously the quality of the wedding band makes a difference too. Not all live bands are alike. There is also the popularity factor which means that some bands have a well earned reputation as a great band for hire and can charge accordingly. This does not mean that there are not similiar acts which may offer an almost identical service at a cheaper price.
At Live Music Management we are well aware of the budget constraints that all of us face in these difficult times and we are happy to advice you on the best low cost wedding entertainment available for your day. Our advice would be to give LMM a brief about what kind of band you are looking for and which area you are getting married and allow us to put forward the best function band options. There are many bands out there that are little more than back street pub acts that may look like value but will possibly ruin your wedding!

Swing bands have such a great collection of songs to choose from in order to put together their wedding band sets. The great American songbook, as the collection of swing covers played by the likes of Sinatra,Ella Fitzgerald, Michael Buble etc has come to be known, is a rich and brilliant selection of songs with many tunes that are known from movies,TV and hundreds of cover versions.
If you are looking for a dinner jazz set then you may want some ballads included in the bands set list but if you are looking for a jazz swing band with an uptempo set list then the songs below are amongst the top tunes to look out for.
All of the songs below have been covered by the top swing singers and so I have not put an artists name at the side of any of the song tittles. For my money if Sinatra covered the track he has usually made it his own but Tony Bennet,Dean Martin,Ella and Paul Anka are amongst the other great singers of the swing era. More recently Rod Stewart,West Life and Robbie Williams have all made covers albums of swing covers.

We are planning St Patricks Day in many of our venues already (yes I know Xmas is still not here) and in order to get the right Irish Party Band playing in the venues we want to make sure all our mobile DJs and function bands have a good top ten list of Irish Party Songs to work from. These are not neccesarily the best Irish songs but they are the ones which the majority of people will recognise and want to dance to.

Last night we went to see Adam Ant at the fantastic Rock City in Nottingham where our mobile DJ Jim Brown plays in the Cherry Lounge. After the gig we joined him for a quick drink and the manager asked us if we still had our ticket stubbs as Adam Ant wanted one for his collection (he collects a ticket from every show he plays) and the venue had given all theirs away. Apart from the thrill of Adam Ant taking our own ticket for his collection it set my mind thinking about other post and pre gig band rituals.
1.Famously rock band Van Halen asked for M and Ms with all the brown ones taken out for their pre show rider!
2. One band for hire that I worked with some years ago would take fishing tackle with them to every show . The wedding band would set up and fish a nearby river or lake before every wedding booking.
3. A latin band that Live Music Management have the pleasure to book spend ten minutes in the dressing room playing percussion before every gig in order to get in the mood.
4. One great Irish Band would always warm up in the dressing room by playing versions of old punk songs on fiddle and whistle.
5. Maria Carey apparently asked for puppy dogs to be available in her dressing room (surely this isn’t true!)
6. Group hugs…many function bands start of the set with a group hug…..well you got to share the love!
7. After the show I know many party bands that will keep a flyer as a memento of the gig.
8. Wearing some lucky item of clothing. Its for good reason that the drummer of that tribute band wears the same socks at every gig.
9.I was in a covers band playing events that named every item of equiptment with coded names and loaded the van using these obscure names to break the boredom…..so a guitar might be fetch me “chipmonk number five” or an amp would be “fetch me the central controller” It made loading the van a long old job for newcomers!
10. A pre show glass of port was the tipple for one wedding singer I knew. He never drank the stuff at any other time.
