Booking Amatuer Bands For Weddings

bride

bride

I read recently that the hiring of a band or DJ for a wedding is tenth in the list of priorities for a Bride and Groom, way below hiring of a wedding venue, choice of food, flowers, dress etc etc. This really disturbs me.

Of course Live Music Management are an entertainment agency with a vested interest in people prioritising entertainment at their weddings but I would like to make a persuasive argument for why people should consider very carefully the music they book for their wedding party.

Music is a powerful thing.Even at low volume it changes the tone and feel of a room.Even if people hardly notice the music playing in the background it can change their moods accordingly. That’s why retail stores choose their playlists according the demographic and atmosphere they wish to create. It’s why sports people can be psyched up by high BPM sounds and why riots can be calmed by muzac. The guests at a wedding will have their moods changed more by the background music than they will be the colour of the tableclothes or the choice of flowers and once the music is turned up to create a party atmosphere then the party will live or die on the quality of the live wedding band or  mobile DJ.

I have had several conversations with potential clients where they have conceded that they are going to book a band who are ”friends of a friend” that is amateur musicians who have a band with which play occasionally and with clients who have said “someone at work has offered to DJ..he reckons he has done it before.” The same clients would never allow an amateur cook to do the catering or a pal with a sewing kit to make the wedding dress.

A wedding party is the biggest event most people will ever organise.I would argue that the entertainment on the night will be the single biggest factor in making that event memorable.I have been in the room when a poor quality function band or a useless DJ tries to win over a crowd….and fails.

If budget is an issue for your wedding party (and of course budgets have to be assigned to all aspects of a wedding) Live Music Management would suggestion baring the above in mind and looking at various options. Better to have a high quality solo singer than a poor quality five piece band.Better to have a three piece great band than a seven piece poor quality but cheap wedding band.Always better to have a pro DJ than someone who fancies themselves as a DJ but has little experience. If in doubt please call the LMM office on 08454 900515 we should be able to help accommodate your budgets.

Paul McCartney With LIPA Graduate

Paul McCartney With LIPA Graduate

I am currently reading Howard Sounes “Intimate Life Of Paul McCartney” and there is a very interesting section on the founding of LIPA (Liverpool Institute Of Performing Arts.) According to the account it cost £18 million to launch.£3 million of this came from Paul McCartney personally who had originaly become involved because he wanted to save his old Liverpool Institute school building. It was only later that he decided to support the founding of a performing art college.

There are a number of musicians playing in Live Music Management bands who are graduates of LIPA and other performing arts colleges. In fact in the past ten or fifteen years there have been a massive increase in the people attending performance courses at University and College level. As industry professionals Live Music Management have seen a huge uplift in the level of musicianship we see amongst young musicians.Courses at the Brit School ,LIPA ,Leeds College Of Music etc have fostered a whole generation of quality musicians. At school level there are courses like Nottinghamshire 11th Session where my daughter attended until recently and I have had the pleasure of witnessing twelve year old kids playing Led Zeppelin covers note for note (enough tp strike fear into the hearts of older musos!)

The one thing that these courses cannot teach when it comes to live performance is experience and it is certainly noticeable when bands full of quality players do not get the live experience they need to be truly great wedding bands and function bands but at Live Music Management we do attempt to offer party bands shows at live venues when they can cut their teeth playing low value shows before commanding higher fees on the corporate circuit. Our audition process helps us to ensure that only the best new bands are put forward as Live Music Management party bands.

The Top Ten Sexiest Songs Ever!

Top ten Sexiest Songs

Top ten Sexiest Songs

Billboard magazine have recently published the top fifty sexiest songs ever to reach the charts. The list is slanted towards the United States charts,as you would expect, and contains tracks by the likes of Exile and Vince Gill which would meet with blank stares if mentioned in a pub quiz over here. The top ten is worth printing though as it contains a few classics which might find it into a DJs playlist at a wedding or party. It is unlikely that any of them would achieve the desired effect of creating a sexy mood though (perhaps with the exception of Marvin Gayes Lets Get It On which manages to sound explicit and sexy rather than explicit and comical!)

The fact that Rod Stewart gets two songs in the top ten and that number one is the Olivia Newton John aerobics classic “Physical” just about sums it up.

1.Olivia Newton John-Lets Get Physical

2.Rod Stewart-Tonights The Night

3.Boys to Men-Ill Make Love To You

4.Next-Too Close

5.Marvin Gaye-Lets Get It On

6.Donna Summer-Hot Stuff

7.Captain and Tennille-Do That To Me One More Time

8.Madonna-Like A Virgin

9.Exile-Kiss You Allover

10.Rod Stewart-Do Ya Think I’m Sexy.

It may be that some couple out there are looking for a suitably sexy first dance song to vocalise their desire for each other. It would be a brave couple that chose Do Ya Think I’m Sexy for their wedding band or mobile DJ to play for first dance but Live Music Management do not stand in judgement!

Bruce Springsteen Manchester Live Review June 22 2012

springsteen live

springsteen live

I live in a village with the highest per capita number of Bruce Springsteen fans outside of New Jersey. Four neighbours have already seen multiple dates on the current Springsteen tour including the legendary Madrid gig where Springsteen played his longest show yet with three hours and forty minutes of on stage time.I myself have been a Springsteen fan since I saw the Old Grey Whistle test broadcast of Rosalita.I was twelve years old when I saw that clip and it was shortly after seeing  Bruce Springsteen on The OGWT that I was  inspired  to form my first band.In the past thirty years I have racked up half a dozen Springsteen shows but thats nothing compared to my neighbours total which runs into the hundreds.

Manchester on June 22 was wet, cold and miserable enough for me to spend the final hour before the Boss hit the stage wishing that I had stayed home with a DVD and a glass of red wine but what kind of strange magic did Springsteen unleash in order to stop the rain shortly before he came on and to raise the temperature so that the cold meant nothing for the duration of the three hour show?

A Springsteen show is closer to a religious revival meeting than a standard rock and roll concert.By that I don’t mean that Springsteen expects his fans to worship him (although a fair bit of that is in evidence) but that Springsteen projects and inspires belief like a preacher. His show is life affirming and inspiring in a way that no other is. Springsteen carries no rock star baggage ,no stage props or massive lighting rig and he drives the audience with a performance thats states loudly “I am here to have fun and my job is to make you have fun too.”

Within this uplifting show is room for remembrance of friends who have passed and the concert contained several memorable and moving moments in tribute to Clarence Clemons who was represented not just by the heart stopping picture collage half way through Tenth Avenue Freezeout, when the music stopped and Springsteen stood stock still watching Clarences photos projected onto the big screen, but also by the presence of Clarence’s nephew ,Jake, who received a standing ovation everytime he played one of his uncles sax solos.

There is a recognition of our mortality in Springsteens shows with the loss of both Danny Federici  and Clarence Clemons acknowledged in the performance (and somehow this is translated to those of us who have also lost people close to us as a shared loss) but this is balanced by the celebration of life within this three hour event.

Springsteen is a great songwriter far from the one dimensional cliche of a writer of songs about cars and girls. His latest album, Wrecking Ball, tackles the current financial crisis with the same natural ease as he dealt with the September 11th terrorist acts on The Rising album. He has written hundreds of quality songs in various styles that all still sound like Springsteen. The musical well he draws from is deep and contains folk, old school RNB,powerpop, american rock and roll,Irish music and straight ahead rock but for all that he makes good, sometimes great, records the true Springsteen experience is seeing the live show.

I bumped into Mark who sings with one of our wedding bands,The Docs, at the pre Springsteen show Badlands fan club party.”I’ve come for tips on how to be a great frontman from the governor,” said Mark. If you book a function band from Live Music Management that acknowledges the brilliance of Springsteen you will not go far wrong!

Rock Karaoke

What is Rock Karaoke?

Well for the purposes of this blog it is two separate things.

1.Rock Karaoke is our Live Karaoke Bands aka Rockaoke or Bandeoke performing big classic anthems live on stage with guest singers chosen from the audience.

2.Rock Karaoke is also one of our great themed karaoke nights with a DJ who understands and loves rock music supplying a night of karaoke which will satisfy the biggest rock head in the crowd.

If you have a small number of guests you may find that a karaoke DJ with a good selection or rock material will be sufficient to create a great atmosphere at your event and Live Music Management can certainly provide the right DJ with great guys like Jim Brown on our books (Jim used to be front man for a number of fantastic rock bands both original and covers.)

With a live Rock Karaoke night then Live Music Management have the best selection of live karaoke bands in the UK and as originators of the Rockaoke craze we have maintained quality whilst at the same time ensuring we have Bandeoke bands located thoughout the UK in order to offer our clients both choice and best price on the UKs top Rockaoke bands.

Affordable Jewish Wedding Bands

Thursday, June 21st, 2012

Within the wedding industry there are a number of niche markets. There are events companies ,wedding bands , mobile DJs and wedding planners who specialise in nothing more than Jewish Weddings. There are a select number of Jewish wedding bands that have been in existence for decades and have played at hundreds of Jewish weddings their experience being trusted by generations of the same family to deliver the day with a traditional element and a party section. The drawback, for the client, is that these bands charge a premium for this service. On many occasions Jewish Wedding bands are charging up to ten times what other function bands are charging.

In the past few years Live Music Management have had an increasing number of enquiries and bookings from Jewish clients who , simply, cannot afford to pay the fees that some of the established Jewish wedding bands are charging. This has led to a number of our acts picking up work, learning the traditional Israeli music sections of the Jewish wedding reception and offering a brilliant, lower cost Jewish wedding entertainment option .

Bands like Sugar Shack , The Party Junction , Scarlett , Jade and Hollywood have all played jewish weddings in the past few years and to great acclaim. If you are looking for a quality and affordable Jewish wedding band then please do give the Live Music Management office a call as we have some fantastic bands available.

How Green Is Your Wedding?

Green Weddings

Green Weddings

We are all a little more conscious of saving energy and doing our best for the environment and there has been a buzz in the wedding industry for a few years now about so called “green weddings.” Being green aware can mean doing your bit for the environment but in doing so it can also mean savings for your own pocket and can be fun. At Live Music Management all our wedding bands recycle songs from other acts and that’s a start but here’s a fun check list for brides and grooms planning a green wedding.

1. Buy or recycle an old wedding ring. New gold is expensive. The gold mining industry is one of the worst businesses in the world for exploitation. Why not use an old family ring or failing that buy vintage.

2.Same goes for the wedding dress.Second hand may not be second best.Vintage is cool and so is buying a designer dress thats been worn once.

3.Make sure your guests only throw confetti that the birdies and squirrels will eat.

4.Arrive at the church in style in a smart car convertible..or buy horse and carriage or the family saloon not some massive gas guzzler!

5.Re use the chapel flowers at the reception.Don’t waste money and valuable fertiliser on two lots of flowers…thats just lining the pockets of the florists and destroying the earth’s resources!

6.Don’t serve the buffet on paper or plastic plates. They flop around when heavily loaded!

7 .Using recycled paper for the wedding invites is great but how about not sending invites out full stop. The paperless wedding is here with wedding websites and facebook or email invitations.

8.Talk to Live Music Management about the best wedding band or mobile DJ living local to you. Less miles to travel means less travel costs and a greener footprint.

Hope you found this useful.

Prime Circle At Shepherds Bush Walkabout June 24 2012

Wednesday, June 20th, 2012
prime circle

prime circle

South African music legends Prime Circle are playing Shepherds Bush Walkabout this coming Sunday,June 24 2012 following their appearance at the Homelanz Festival. The band will be playing songs from their ten year career and this is an amazing opportunity for fans to see this fantastic live band up close and personal.

Live Music Management have been booking Antipodean and Southern Hemisphere recording acts into Shepherds Bush Walkabout for well over a decade and over the years we have had acts as diverse as The Exponents, Grinspoon, Men At Work , Rolf Harris and Springbok Nude Girls playing on the She Bu stage.

The Shepherds Bush Walkabout has become a home from home for many visiting Southern Hemisphere bands and this is in large part down to the fantastic management team down at the venue , especially the manager Adam, who promote the dates and make the acts feel welcome. The venue itself proves a great intimate atmosphere for the acts, many of whom are playing stadiums back home.

This part of Live Music Managements work is an interesting sideline to our daily booking of cover bands and bands for weddings and is something that the team in the office get a real kick from when the sold out sign flies outside the Shepherds Bush Walkabout.

You can buy tickets for Prime Circles Shepherds Bush Walkabout show from the venue itself. There should be some tickets available on the door on the night but you would be advised to buy tickets in advance to avoid disappointment.

Five Tips For A Garden Party

Top Tips For Garden Parties

Top Tips For Garden Parties

As I write this the sun is shining in the South and big black rain clouds are rolling in from the North. It’s a fairly typical day in the UK,Summer 2012.

By mid June the garden party and festival season is in full swing and a number of Summer weddings have been planned with receptions held in gardens and outdoor areas. The unpredictable weather ,obviously, has a massive impact on this and although Live Music Management can do nothing to help with the weather at your garden party we can help you to plan how to best deal with the rain.

1.Don’t be fooled by the Sunshine. You may need shelter!

Either hire a marquee or buy a solid marquee (my local residents association recently spent £400 on a marquee from B and Q and it saw us through a rainy night in June when our annual BBQ was met by torrential rain. It actually added to the atmosphere with the forty or so guests huddled together under the canapy listening to live music from an acoustic duo.

2.Make sure your electrics are safe. If you are hiring a marquee you may be able to relinquish responsibility to the marquee hire company who might be supplying a generator but if you are sourcing the electricity yourself from the mains then make sure all the leads are safe and away from water.

3.Set up a safe dry area for your entertainment (especially if they are using electric equiptment) Don’t let the band set up directly on the ground which may get wet during a downpour.A wedding band needs to be safe to perform!

4.If you are supplying the music yourself then the same things apply but also you should consider is the equipment you intend to play your music over adequate for the number of people due to attend your party? What sounds okay in the house may sound distorted and puny when cranked up to deal with the background chatter of thirty or more guests, especially in an outdoor area. You may want to consider hiring a mobile DJ who will have the equiptment to cope with a larger crowd.

5.Unless you live in a stately home you need to invite the neighbours if you are holding a party in your garden! The last thing you want is a visit from the police half way through your party. The best way to avoid this is to speak to all the neighbours and make sure they have an invite or are aware of the fact that you are holding a party.Decide on a curfew for the night and then stick to it making sure any live function band or mobile dj is aware that they need to finish the music at this time.

Have a great summer party and if you are looking for entertainment please do call Live Music Management on 08454 900515.
