One of the key wedding trends of the 2000′s has been the wedding after party.

When Kate and William married they held a reception which was attended by family and friends. They then retreated to a private quarter in Buckingham Palace where the wedding after party took place for an intimate circle of friends who share Prince William and Kate’s tastes in music and dancing (which by all accounts included some key hip hop and chart anthems and , LMM have a first hand account , The Killers Mr Brightside , Prince Williams choice!)

The wedding after party is now firmly ingrained in the UK wedding landscape with many clients asking Live Music Management for information about wedding DJ’s that can play sets aimed at the family in the early part of the evening and a  more selective crowd later in the night. Not all of these after wedding parties change venue for the after show but some of them do . Other  wedding after parties accommodate the older guests but make it clear that post 11pm or post midnight belongs to the younger crowd with the preferred style of music ,whether that be indie , RnB , Hip Hop or dance , being played in the later set. They hire a great party DJ for this part of the evening.

Live Music Management have also noticed a trend towards chill out after wedding parties with acoustic bands being booked to provide a laid back sound scape of either background music or music to sing a long to. Often this is emulating the popular chalet parties which people have enjoyed when they have been skiing in the smart European resorts. Live Music Management have a number of bands who play in the ski resorts and are comfortable offering this style of wedding after party.

Live Music Management have been involved with a number of bands competition nights over the years. The JD Soundcheck was a massive nationwide bands competition which had a fantastic prize of a trip to Memphis with a days recording session in Sun Studios and a tasting trip around the Jack Daniels factory. I was very pleased to be chosen as a judge on this bands competition but would have loved to have won the prize!

I was also chosen to be a judge on a daytime TV talent slot, although not exactly a bands competition , was a proto type daytime X Factor. The show was a segment on ITV’s Love2shop programme and I was the judge for a serious of shows including a live final where the contestants performed on stage at the Trafford Centre.

And so we arrive at 2013 where there is a bands competition running in the Walkabout venues which has an absolutely brilliant first prize. The bands competition is called The Road To The Isle Of Wight and the prize is a slot at the Isle Of Wight Festival. This prize is really a great opportunity to showcase your band and I can’t imagine any bands competition matching it in terms of it’s ability to put a band right where they want to be.

The entrants for this bands competition is pretty much closed now (but contact your local Walkabout venue if you want to see if there are any slots left due to acts dropping out etc) and I am hoping to get over to Leeds Walkabout on Friday when I will be judging the local Leeds heat.

It makes a change for me to be involved in judging an original band competition as opposed to working with   wedding bands or function bands but as my background is in the original music world and I still attend many shows and buy many CD’s and downloads I do feel qualified to be able to make a judgement about the quality of an act.

I haven’t yet seen a list of the acts that are appearing over in Leeds on Friday but I understand that there are a number of acoustic bands likely to be appearing on the bill and there are also some rock bands and I am looking forward to seeing them all. Will give you an update after Friday. LMM DJ Matt De Santos Picks Up 97,000 Twitter Followers In Two Weeks

Live Music Management DJ Matt De Santos is, what we call in the office, a good all rounder. He hosts stage games on his ever popular Mad Monday nights in Hanley  Walkabout, he works student nights including a very successful Thursday in Birmingham Walkabout as a party dj , he plays dance music on his club bookings. He has hosted several Radio shows on commercial radio and is a local celebrity in the North West area for his Wish FM shows. He even does the occasional bar mitzvah for LMM and gets massive praise for this. He is capable of doing pretty much any kind of nightclub DJ booking and doing it well but we never expected him to become such an online sensation.

Just to let you know I’ve had a crazy couple of weeks since the release of a remix I did of Emilie Sande’s Next To Me.

This got permission to be played in both North and South America and I’ve had a phenomenal reaction on my social networking pages. I went from a handful of people on my Soundcloud account to almost 1000 in the last week. But it’s my twitter account that has blown me away. As I send this I’m on 97,000 + followers!

Whilst Matt De Santos has some way to go yet before he becomes the new Gangham Style of Harlem Shake sensation it is amazing what can happen online in just a short period of time. The remix has propelled him into the rarefied air of those with close to  100,000 twitter followers (he is expecting to exceed this in a few days) which gives him a great audience for anything he does next and whatever he does next is bound to be brilliant and exciting  cause that’s the kind of DJ he is!

To follow up our previous blog “why women should never marry musicians ” and in tribute to one of our mobile DJs who gets married next month here is Live Music Managements tongue in cheek top ten reasons why women should never marry a DJ.

1.You think it’s a phase he’s going through. It is not.

2.When you say that you like a song on the radio he will insist on playing you a remix of it which speeds the song up , inserts some dodgy samples and takes away the melody (which was the thing you liked in the first place.)

3. Deejays work in night clubs. Girls go to night clubs. Some of them are drunk and might fancy him.

4. He will be working when every sensible person is in bed and during the day he will be sleeping or watching Jeremy Kyle or playing Call Of Duty or going to the gym (with doormen!)

5.He will want to be the wedding DJ at your wedding. You will have to talk him out of it but when drunk he will insist on getting behind the decks and mixing together some songs which will be sentimental to him as they remind him of the year he spent DJing in Aya Napur back when he was young, free and single. Your Granny will dance to UK Garage.

6. He will have friends who are DJs. They will all be boring and will mainly talk about gigs they have played in night clubs which no longer exist.

7.He won’t be able to hear a song without mentioning how he once did a perfect mix from this song to something else and it worked so well that the crowd cheered him. This will make him stare blissfully into the distance with a far away look in his eyes as he recalls the mix between S Club 7′s “Reach For The Stars” and DJ Pied Piper’s “Do You Really Like It” which made him a legend in Richmonds number one twin scene club.

8.Occasionally he will talk to you in his DJ voice. This will be loud and a bit American or loud and very cockney or loud and  smooth like Simon Bates. It will be loud that’s for sure.

9.He will work mainly in night clubs but he will keep a full mobile DJ rig which he last used when he was seventeen in the garage where it will take up valuable lawn mower space.Sometimes he will go down and “fire it up” for old times sake.He will be very happy mixing vinyl (or CD) and a bit grumpy when he has to go back to his digital system (even though no one in their right mind wants to carry a suitcase full of vinyl around with them.)

10.He will miss your birthday, anniversary,Mums birthday, New Years Eve and every other important date because he will be entertaining the nation.

More than anything it’s that number ten that is the reason why women should never marry a DJ however we at Live Music Management salute the women who do marry DJs. You put up with a lot……and we love you for it.

Live Music Management don’t really make enough of a song and dance about the specialist areas of entertainment that we are able to supply acts to. If you look on the Live Music Management website you will probably struggle to find anywhere explaining our expertise in supplying DJs for Bar Mitzvahs and yet we have a number of mobile DJs who have a great deal of experience in playing at Bar Mitzvahs.

Last weekend Mike Wedgewood played at a Bar Mitzvah in London. It was a beautiful, grand affair with a full evenings entertainment but Mike was the pivotal act that held everything together.He was able to keep a busy dance floor and co-ordinate the whole evening, play the traditional music at the right points etc etc. Mike has a great deal of experience in event managing events in night clubs and party bars as well as at private events and so it is what we would have expected of him.

The client sent the following email of praise.

This is exactly the kind of feedback that we would hope for and expect when we supply a DJ for  bar mitzvahs.

Live Music Management supply around twenty bar mitzvahs per anum. It’s a very small part of our work profile. One issue is that there are a number if individuals and companies who are well known in this market place. They charge a premium for their services but clients are prepared to pay it in order to get someone known within the community and with the experience of playing at bar mitzvahs before.These DJ’s are not neccesarily the best in their field but they have credibility because they have a longer list of previous bar mitzvah clients.They probably advertise in the right places and market themselves as djs for bar mitzvahs.

Tis only a few short sleeps untill Halloween, a night of hi jinx and magick , thrills and chills……and partying!!!! Who Ya Gonna Call?

Live Music Management are big fans of Halloween and every year around this time we get the call from events organisers and party bookers. We are not Ghostbusters but we are great at hiring out the perfect Halloween entertainment for your club or party.

We knew of a band a few years back whose entire act was impersonating noteable dead pop stars. They had a Kurt Cobain, Elvis Presley,Jimi Hendrix etc and their set was peppered with Halloween classics like Monster Mash , The Time Warp and Thriller. Obviously Halloween was a premier night for this party band and around October 31 their fee would be inflated and they would have a packed diary. Not surprisingly the flip side to this was they were not that busy at other times of the year and they eventually folded.

Live Music Management do not have a dedicated Halloween band but we do have several function bands who can tweak their act to suit your Halloween party. The photo at the top of this page is of The Hi Fidels who became legends for their elaborate Halloween costumes which they donned at venues every October 31 . LMM have a number of acts who are happy to accomodate your theme with costumes and tracks suitable to celebrate All Hallows Eve.

Music Consultancy

Live Music Management have been involved with formulating and advising on music policies for bars for the best part of ten years but today is the first time a brief has been decided upon which correspondences directly with my own music tastes.

I have a meeting this afternoon with the the DJs from one of the bars we supply entertainment to. I will be spending a few hours going through the new brand music policy for this great student bar. Part of the meeting will be to identify tracks which fit perfectly with the music profile of this bar which appeals to the left field student market not served by the high street. Music to be played will include new indie tracks by the likes of the Macabees , Black Keys , Two Door Cinema Club etc , retro rock n roll by the likes of The Clash , Chuck Berry etc, Funk by the likes of James Brown , Aaron Neville , Curtis Mayfield et al and Northern Soul / Motown anthems.

It’s all the music that I have playing on my Ipod on random shuffle.

Really looking forward to the meeting. I always enjoy the music consultancy part of our business but when it ties in so much with my own tastes it’s really not like work at all.
