LMM run showcases on a pretty regular basis for our largest clients like the Walkabout Bars and for work overseas etc.
Showcases can be hit and miss affairs.The circumstances of organising them to suit clients and venue often mean that they are held when the venue is “cold” (.i.e there are not many people in attendance) and it takes a band or DJ with real guts and stage presence to impress. Having said that there can be times when a band or DJ under performs in this environment and LMM (and sometimes the clients we have organised the showcase for) will often try and see through the nerves in order to get to the heart of the act and work out whether it is suitable for the work.
I have personal experience of being on stage and showcasing because back in the 1990s when I was playing in bands full time I did a showcase one year and we pulled off a blinder.Everything went perfect and we came off stage to the appreciation of our peers and the clients present.Picked up loads of work.
Two years later we did the same showcase again and we were terrible and actually lost some of the work we already had!Everything you can imagine could go wrong went wrong in those fifteen minutes on stage and it probably cost us £10,000 in lost bookings.
So when we showcase acts now as “judges” and not performers we try and look for the things which go wrong and try and understand that fifteen minutes on stage in front of a cold audience is often a difficult performance.
That said and the original reason for this blog was to draw your attention to the video above of the Dominos.
The video was filmed on an iphone so the sound and picture quality are not that great but the performance is tremendous and even more so when you realise it was filmed at 3.30 in the afternoon at Shepherds Bush Walkabout in front of an audience of bar staff and a dozen regulars plus the clients we had invited down.
The band gave it their all.
Their professionalism and stage prescence shone out and they came away with some quality,prestigious overseas work.
