Since the James Bond franchise has been rebooted by the Daniel Craig Bond movies there has been a significant increase in James Bond themed weddings. James Bond weddings have the glamour and glitz associated with the Bond theme and a number of live bands have sprung up with the classic Bond music in their set list. One of the most authentic and best of these Bond theme bands is the 007 Band.

Corporate parties and conferences are fun but they can also be intimidating enviroments for the novice attendee and a good event planner will consider many different ways of encouraging dialogue , making people feel comfortable and breaking the ice.

Todays blog concentrates on the many ways that booking  ice breaking entertainment can help your conference be the talk of the town (and not the whisper in the village.)

Book Entertainment Which Is Inclusive And Encourages Participation

Team building style entertainment can be provided by a live karaoke band AKA Rockaoke or Bandeoke and for the right kind of event this lively entertainment is perfect at breaking down walls and encouraging participation. Don’t be put off by the rock tag. Live Music Management have supplied Swingeoke swing bands for events with an older guest list and set lists can often be tailored to the attendees.

 

Create A Talking Point

There are a number of entertainment ideas which create a talking point. A costumed stilt walker or fire breather can be enough to break the ice upon guests arrival. An even more impressive start to the evening would be a stilt walking band who can perform music whilst walking around the venue (or outside the venue) on stilts. Perhaps an even bigger surprise ice breaking entertainment is our Pop Up Musicians who can tailor their entrance to offer an impressive wow factor which will definitely get the conference attendees talking.

London is one of the most exciting cities on earth with a wealth of entertainment on offer every single night of the week. Live Music Management are very lucky to have had a small part in the cultural life of London in  that  LMM have been instrumental in booking live bands in London into some of the Capitols most prestigious venues over the past fifteen years. We also book London DJs for events and venues both large and small throughout London. On todays blog we outline some of our favourite venues to catch live bands in London.

Dingwalls

Camden’s iconic Dingwalls is a venue very dear to Live Music Management’s heart. Not only has it hosted shows for up and coming bands for over thirty years but it was also the home of LMM team member DJ Big Als sunday residency for a number of years. Dingwalls has held shows for The Foo Fighters, Mumford and Sons, Pink , The Strokes , Coldplay and Noel Gallagher amongst others in the past five years or so. It’s a venue that has become a rock n roll institution . There are great bands playing at Dingwalls all the time. Many of them are just on the verge of breaking big, some of them are already huge!

Walkabout Shepherds Bush

A great place to see a visiting Australasian band or to see one of Londons party bands doing their stuff.

Union Chapel

If you get the chance to see a band in this brilliant gem of a venue then do take it. Union Chapel holds occasional bookings for acoustic acts and is one of our favourite intimate spaces in the Capitol.

Guanabara

Guanabara is a great place to catch one of Londons top funk bands . Its a large Brazilian thmed club that has fantastic live music throughout the week with the emphasis on cool and trendy London soul bands

Walkabout Temple

If you are looking for a great venue that has some live music on a Saturday night then it’s worth checking out Temple Walkabout as the place to see London party duos playing their sets .

The Roadhouse

The Roadhouse in Covent Garden is a fantastic place to see a Rockaoke Band (and maybe even join in with the Live Band Karaoke) The Roadhouse runs the best in London function bands on most nights of the week.

The Lexington

Fantastic venue in Angel which holds small scale shows for all kinds of bands but in particular alt country and indie acts. LMM love this venue.

The Hootananny Brixton

A great live venue in Brixton which is a new discovery for the Live Music Management gang. The Hootananny Brixton holds a number of world music events and is a great venue to catch something new and original .

London is a great city for Live Music and above are several venues to see Live Music of all descriptions. Its gotta be better than sitting in the house!!

Live Music Management have been involved with a number of bands competition nights over the years. The JD Soundcheck was a massive nationwide bands competition which had a fantastic prize of a trip to Memphis with a days recording session in Sun Studios and a tasting trip around the Jack Daniels factory. I was very pleased to be chosen as a judge on this bands competition but would have loved to have won the prize!

I was also chosen to be a judge on a daytime TV talent slot, although not exactly a bands competition , was a proto type daytime X Factor. The show was a segment on ITV’s Love2shop programme and I was the judge for a serious of shows including a live final where the contestants performed on stage at the Trafford Centre.

And so we arrive at 2013 where there is a bands competition running in the Walkabout venues which has an absolutely brilliant first prize. The bands competition is called The Road To The Isle Of Wight and the prize is a slot at the Isle Of Wight Festival. This prize is really a great opportunity to showcase your band and I can’t imagine any bands competition matching it in terms of it’s ability to put a band right where they want to be.

The entrants for this bands competition is pretty much closed now (but contact your local Walkabout venue if you want to see if there are any slots left due to acts dropping out etc) and I am hoping to get over to Leeds Walkabout on Friday when I will be judging the local Leeds heat.

It makes a change for me to be involved in judging an original band competition as opposed to working with   wedding bands or function bands but as my background is in the original music world and I still attend many shows and buy many CD’s and downloads I do feel qualified to be able to make a judgement about the quality of an act.

I haven’t yet seen a list of the acts that are appearing over in Leeds on Friday but I understand that there are a number of acoustic bands likely to be appearing on the bill and there are also some rock bands and I am looking forward to seeing them all. Will give you an update after Friday. May 5 is a day celebrated in America and certain regions of Mexico as a celebration of everything Mexican in culture , heritage and pride. Cinco de Mayo means, literally , The fifth of May in Spanish. Although the date  originally  came to prominence as part of a celebration of military victories it is now widely celebrated as a festival date and it’s influence has been felt by the wedding industry in the USA and by party planners in the UK who are now planning events with a Cinco de Mayo theme.

Obviously there is a much smaller Mexican presence in the UK then in the USA but keeping an eye on trends is part of the job of event entertainment provider / event planner and Live Music Management have noticed Cinco de Mayo and Mexican themed nights being mentioned by clients recently. It is only a small number of clients at present but it is obvious that something is in the air.

In part , and this may seem comical , it is because of the Dorritos advertisement with the Mariachi band. A couple of potential clients have called the office wanting to book the band seen in the adverts. They are a real band and can be booked so if you have the budget we have a contact with their management. The advertisements have been enormously successful and really struck a chord with party planners.

Besides this act there are several options re Mariachi style bands for your Cinco de Mayo Party. There is also the option of booking a mobile DJ or party dj dressed in Mexican costume who will be able to play Mexican themed music to go with your Mexican table decorations and food. Of course Live Music Management also have party bands who are able to dress within the Cinco de Mayo Party theme and play a bit of Mexican and country themed material to suit your event.

Vegas Of The North

I was watching a TV programme last night about the hey day of Blackpool, a period which ran from the early part of the twentieth century right the way up to the 1980s. It was a period when Blackpool crowned itself the “Vegas Of The North.”

There was good reason for this “Vegas Of The North” tittle. For a period some of the biggest stars in world entertainment camped in Blackpool for shows and Summer season. Legends like Frank Sinatra played shows at the Opera House. Morecombe and Wise played Summer seasons in the town most years (an equivalent would be Ant and Dec taking sixteen weeks live work in theatres over the Summer season something which we can be fairly certain won’t happen!) Laurel And Hardy played theatres in the town during the end of their career. Hollywood glamour arrived in the shape of Jane Mansfield. The Beatles and Cilla Black both appeared in the town on the bills of variety shows (Cilla hosting her own Summer Season.)

Besides this long forgotten stars like Frank Randall earned fortunes in the town. Frank Randall was rumoured to be earning a £1000 per week back in the 1940′s. Other stars of this period included George Formby , Gracie Fields and Hilda Baker they all played to packed houses for weeks on end. Even in the 1980s Cannon and Ball ,who had recently reached a TV audience , were able to sell to sell out shows twice a day for sixteen weeks playing to over 35,000 people.

The Blackpool of the late 1960′s had over twenty theatre size shows employing around 3,000 people and playing to many thousands of holidaymakers every year.

Of course there are still some acts that continue to play to full houses in Blackpool. This years Summer season will include Roy Chubby Brown and Joe Longthorne who have been Blackpool stalwarts for the past three decades, largely forgotten by TV but able to pull a live audience in a large Blackpool venue.

The Seasons tend to be shorter (sometimes just one show per week instead of twice daily for three months) but it is comforting to know that there is still an old fashioned variety style theatre show playing in the Vegas Of The North every Summer and ,of course, shows like Britain’s Got Talent are really just a continuation of the old style variety packages smartened up for TV.

This weekend Live Music Management have acts playing in the Blackpool Winter Gardens for the annual Young Farmers AGM.

Our great London function band Scarlett are amongst the brilliant party bands playing this iconic venue. There are also Live Music Management party DJs playing over the weekend as well as name DJs like Jameela Jamil , James Buckley from The Inbetweeners and Aled Haydn Jones from Radio One. Live Music Management nightclub DJs will also be playing over in the Blackpool Walkabout . There will be over 5,500 young farmers attending the event and Blackpool will be buzzing and , once again, there will be a Big Night Out in the Vegas Of The North.

Live Music Management have been lucky enough to supply acts to the Motorcycle News Weekend for over six years and this weekend just past we had four bands playing at Skegness Butlins for the annual biker bash.

Platform Six , Satisfunction,  Brainscape and Treacle (playing a specially tailored seventies set as opposed to their usual eclectic  mix) all took to the stage to a rapturous reception . For Platform Six and Brainscape this was a rebooking as both acts have played the MCN weekend in  previous years. It’s a show they all look forward to as the audience are a lively bunch who are out for a great weekend of entertainment and really get into the music. It gives the bands the opportunity to press down on the rock button as many of the rock anthems that they would leave out of their wedding band set would make perfect sense at a weekend like this.

The great thing about many of the LMM bands ,and certainly these four acts, is that they are very versatile. They are all London Wedding Bands that also play at corporate events and nightclubs , student university bookings and holiday parks. They have a wide set list and recognise the requirements of different types of audiences and are able to meet with the different demands of different types of events.

If you are looking for a London function band then you might want to consider one of the acts that played this weekends MCN weekend. They are all great acts with a long history of rocking audiences. If you are planning  a biker rally or similar style beer festival type of event then Treacle ,  Satisfunction,  Brainscape or Platform Six have got to be high on the list of the very best band to book.

For the bands themselves one of the things they have enjoyed this weekend is seeing their names on the back of the “tour style” t shirts produced by Motorcycle News in order to celebrate the weekend. It must be every bands dream to have their own tour T Shirt!

Britney Tribute Plays Circus

Last Thursday was a first for our Britney Spears tribute act and also for Live Music Management. Indeed we think it was a first for the entertainment industry all together. The Russell s International Circus booked our Britney Spears Tribute act to perform alongside circus acts at a circus spectacular which drew fantastic reviews from everyone involved. Besides the Rolling Stones Rock N Roll circus way back in the 1960s (which wasn’t a proper circus anyway) we are pretty certain that this style of evenings entertainment has never been done in the UK before.

Anzac Day In London

April 25 is a national day of remembrance in New Zealand and Australia known as Anzac Day. It honours the troops who died at Gallipoli and in wider conflicts involving troops from the two countries. In Australia it is national holiday and considered by many to be a solemn day of remembrance and thought. Unsurprisingly in the UK it has become a day for ex pat Australians and New Zealanders to bond together.

Live Music Management have been involved in booking live acts for Anzac Day Events in London for over thirteen years . We have supplied DJs to events held in Australia House and to many events held in the London Walkabout venues. Anzac Day tends not to be as big a day as Australia Day but it has real meaning for ex pats and backpackers and many friendships are made and during the Anzac Day celebrations held in the venues we book entertainment for.

Anzac Day In London has all the best elements of a public holiday with Australasians going out for the day or the evening in the company of their countrymen but it also retains a note of solemnity and Live Music Management arrange for buglers to play the last post at a key point in the day. To see a venue full of young people stand stock still and maintain a two minute silence ,many of them visibly moved by the buglers haunting tune, is an image that Live Music Management will always remember.

This April 25 ‘s Anzac Day in London will feature live Australian themed bands and DJs who will play many of the key Aussie anthems. There will be a bugler in place in London’s Temple Walkabout and Shepherds Bush Walkabout. The celebrations start early and it is wise to arrive at the venue from 5pm in order to enjoy a night of party band music with an Aussie theme.

Live Music Management are honoured to have been associated with Anzac Day events in London since the 1990s and hope that our Australian and Kiwi brothers and sisters have a great day.
