Cheesy Party Bands

cheesy party band

cheesy party band

In the past fifteen years the team here at Live Music Management have heard the term “cheesy party bands ” used both as an insult and as a recommendation. We have found that one man’s cheese is another man’s gorgonzola!

Now that we have confused ourselves as well as anyone reading this blog let us explain what we mean.

Cheesy used to be used as an insult to describe any form of entertainment that wasn’t cool. So Timmy Mallet or Tony Blackburn would be described as cheesy party DJ’s and Black Lace or Brotherhood Of Man would be seen as cheesy party bands . Then we all discovered irony and cheesy sometimes meant cool.

Certainly some of the bands which had previously been thought to be cheesy became cool. The best example of this might be ABBA who had been considered cheesy for a generation and then were rediscovered as cool by the following generation of pop fans. There are hundreds of other examples of music which have gone through this process. In fact some of the acts rediscovered by indie kids in Huxton have been in and out of the cheese mongers for a decade or more with acts like Supertramp and ELO who were long thought to be cheesy now considered to the at the heart of cool and even the music of Stock, Aitken and Waterman going through a cheese to cool transformation on the Ipods of the cool kids of London.

In the night club industry Live Music Management used to be asked to provide a cheesy DJ for a particular night. Then we were told not to provide a cheesy DJ and to make sure that the nightclub DJ      was party and not cheese .It all becomes very confusing even for industry professionals like Live Music Management and so God knows what the one off hirer of a wedding DJ  might make of it all.

For function bands wanting to maximise the number of bookings that they want to achieve it is worth looking at the concept of musical cheese in the same way that you would the stilton in your fridge. If you are in a cheesy party band then you need a certain amount of cheese to make the recipe work but if you add too much cheese then the whole thing is going to be ruined.

Live Music Management have a number of cheesy party bands on our books but we like to think that they are all cheesy but cool party bands. If that’s the kind of band that you want to book for your wedding , party or event then give the Live Music Management office a call. We even have some budget bands available for clients looking to hire a live band on a limited budget.

Live Music Management Raise Money For Comic Relief

Monday, March 18th, 2013
Al & Theo Comic Relief 2013

Al & Theo Comic Relief 2013

Massive praise and thanks to the Live Music Management party DJs and bands who raised money for Comic Relief this weekend.

Many of the Walkabout Bars had  fundraising events and the nightclub DJs on site were instrumental in ensuring that fun was had and money was raised. It’s always pleasing that so many acts buy into the charity efforts of the venues we look after and give their time and best efforts to make sure the chairty nights go well.

Live Music Management’s Alex wasn’t Djing himself (as many of you know Alex is a great DJ who still occasionaly likes to get back behind the decks) but he was running (and this time not from the cops.) Al and his nephew did a fun run for Comic Relief and raised £125.

Well done Alex.

Other news from the weekend is that our Irish Bands had a great time with the St Patricks Day events they were booked for and some of them have been asked back already for next St Paddys Day (it’s never too early to book St Patricks Day Entertainment!)

St Patrick’s Day Entertainment

St Patrick's Day Entertainment

St Patrick's Day Entertainment

Writing this on Monday morning at the start of one of the busiest weeks in the calendar with St Patrick’s Day looming large on the horizon. St Patricks Day is also a busy night for our bands, DJs and clients but this year will be especially busy as it falls on a Saturday which , of course, is also the premier night of the week to go out and be entertained.

Live Music Management began planning our St Patrick’s Day entertainment some six months ago and the regular venues that we look after (like The Walkabout venues , Bar Risa , Wahoo , Highlight etc ) will all have special St Patrick’s Day entertainment booked.

Many of them have opted for some live entertainment with our Irish party bands being much in demand on this night. For the majority of City Centre venues , holiday parks and indeed non specialist Irish nights the venue has chosen to book a party band , solo or duo that will play some Irish anthems and also play a mixed bag of covers rather than a band that play exclusively Irish tunes (a set which is likely to contain many tunes that just wouldn’t be recognised by the majority of customers.) That means that we have many function bands playing their normal set but padded out with some Irish tunes chosen because they are the ones most loved by the general party goer. This would include songs like “Tell Me Ma,” “Irish Rover”, “Ce Le Vie” , “Whisky In a Jar” etc and would also maybe include the band playing a few instrumental Irish jigs and reels .

The Deejays working for Live Music Management across the country will be briefed with ensuring that an element of the St Patricks Day Entertainment is thrown into the mix with the tracks above taking centre place and perhaps a little nod to Ireland with themed stilt walkers and decor.

It’s going to be a great Saturday night to go out and party with many venues (both small independents and larger chain bars) looking to capitalise on the St Patrick’s Day vibe by booking extra content into their evenings. Obviously this offers some real value for the customer.

In the private events world Live Music Management have a few great events and parties booked this week with St Patrick’s Day entertainment taking centre stage. There is even a wedding at the weekend were the wedding band have been briefed to ensure an Irish element makes it’s way into the set list.

So get out the shamrocks , order that pint of Guinness and enjoy the week! In particular you should look out for the tremendous bands playing in Temple Walkabout this Friday and Saturday…both Barnstorm and Shake Out are top of their game.

one night standeoke

You can tell that Autumn is drawing ever closer. It’s getting darker at night, there’s a distinct chill in the air and Live Music Management are recieving large numbers of enquiries from student Ents managers looking for quality bands and DJ’s for Freshers events.

Live Music Management have a long history of supplying Universities with entertainment and a large roster of party bands and DJs that suit this kind of event.A popular choice for many University Freshers events in the past few years has been Bandeoke aka Rockaoke or Live Band Karaoke and Live Music Management are well placed to supply the right kind of Bandeoke band for your event at the right price. LMM were the originators of the Live Karaoke craze in the UK starting the first bands almost ten years ago. Beer Festival Bands

Beer Festivals

Beer Festivals

Beer and music go together like……rama lama and ding dong?

We were reminded of this fact over the past week when we  booked bands into two separate beer festivals. We have supplied some music to one down in Oxfordshire and another one taking place in Uttoxeter organised by a good mate of ours.

Back when I was playing in bands an annual event which we looked forward to was a beer festival in a pub car park in Chesterfield. Although billed as a blues festival in reality the bands covered all genres and for several years my old band headlined with an eclectic set which encompassed all styles bar blues! Nonetheless it was a nice event to play as by the time the sun began to set and we took to the stage the audience were enthusiastic (which is a great euphemism for well oiled.)

If you are looking for live acts for your beer festival then we are very happy to try and organise best prices and best band. At LMM we support the grand tradition of combining some good beers with live music.

On the subject of this I was in Sheffield on Friday and popped into Delaneys Bar which I was pleased to see was pretty busy with an offer of Thornbridge Brewery Ales and live music. Fridays band was the Legendary Frank White who I haven’t seen for a year or two but who was a childhood hero of mine. He had a guest guitarist with him who was incredible. A great looking young guy who played Hendrix style licks referencing blues and jazz and blew everyone away. I would like to take this opportunity to wish Steve Delaney every success with his venture.

Still on the subject of beer and bands PRS in partnership with the Musicians Union and the British Beer And Pub Association have awarded The Market Inn in Faversham this years Music Makeover award. The pub will receive £5000 to improve it’s music facilities and receive expert advice on staging music events. This award is part of an initiative to keep music alive in our pubs. Live music at this level is the bedrock of the UKs music industry both in the recording field and in allowing young jobbing musicians the experience which creates great wedding and party bands. It is the platform on which tens of thousands of UK jobs are built.

Beer and bands they go together like……Be Bop A Lulu and a Whop Bam Boo??

Beatboxers For Hire

Grace Beatboxer

Grace Beatboxer

Live Music Management are proud to represent two of the UK’s best Beatboxer acts.

What is beatboxing?

Beatboxing is an art form , vocal percussion and bass notes combining together to make a musical accompiment to singing or rapping or just to create it’s own street style music.

LMM have a brilliant female beatboxer who has recently featured in a major advertising campaign for I Love Apps and also appeared on Rufus Hounds Radio 4 show in a hilarious skit alongside Rufus. You can find details for Grace on her page on our main website in the unique acts for events section.

Bloxed are one of the UK’s top Beatboxer crews . Formed from the ashes of Crew 82 who are the only Beatboxing act to feature on Britains Got Talent (they eventually lost out in the live finals but not before wowing Simon Cowell and the Judges with their prowess.) This perfect beatbox collective are available for your next event.

A beat box act can make for great entertainment at an event and with some imagination we can create magic moments with our Beatboxers for parties

What about a pop up beat boxer at a corporate event?

The singing waiter is still a great surprise addition to a dinner event but it’s getting a little bit done to death. LMM bring the idea into the 21 st century with our pop up beatboxers

Call the LMM office for further ideas incorporating Beatboxing into your next event.

Top Ten Tips On Organising A House Party.

Organising a house party

Top Tips on organising a house party

“It ain’t nothing but a House Party!”  So sang The Showstoppers back in the day on their classic soul hit and house parties remain a popular choice for many Live Music Management clients. In fact we supply well over a hundred acts (either DJs or live bands) to house parties every year and this isn’t counting the many marquee weddings taking place at private residencies.

Organising a house party is one of the simplest event planning opportunities and many people enjoy having guests in their own home as opposed to a corporate venue. There follows a top ten list of tips for people organising a house party. The list is slanted towards entertainment rather than tips on food etc (we will leave that to Nigel, Nigella and Jamie! ) and some of the tips may seem obvious but we hope they offer a good check list for anyone planning a party in their own home.

1.Inform the neighbours of your intentions.Get them on your side by inviting them.

2.Sound travels and it carries further when you are in an isolated spot without immediate neighbours. A party on a housing estate may be loud enough for the people in the same street to hear but in a rural community it can carry some miles. So you might want to inform the people living across the valley in case they feel the need to call the police wondering where the noise is coming from (which happened at a party recently.)

3.Organise appropriate entertainment. See below.

4.Afternoon barbecue or garden party-why not consider an acoustic duo to play pop hits in an unplugged style or a jazz band to provide a laid back and sophisticated ambiance.

5.Dinner party-What about jazz or classical guitar players? A piano player to provide dinner jazz or classical music….maybe a small classical string section.

6. A party which will run through the evening where you expect people to want to dance? Consider if you have the space for a party band if not then take a look at the duos or solos who provide a full band sound with backing tracks.

7.No space for a band or a duo? You may want to book a solo act or a mobile DJ who can get the party rocking.

8. Place the act in a space large enough to accommodate them (in the case of most full four bands this is around 8 foot by 15 foot, for duos you can get get away with around 4 foot deep by 8 foot wide, DJs will need around 4 foot by 4 foot but may need some space for lighting.)

9.Place the act near the power points or run a power point out to them.

10. Ask for the same degrees of security as a professional venue would want. Professional acts will have public liability insurance and PAT certificates for their electrical equipment. Speak to a professional agency like Live Music Management in order to ensure this is provided.

Call Live Music Management on 08454 900515 for details of best deals on house party music.

Limelite Jazz Band Showcase For The Events Industry.

Limelite Jazz Band Showcase

Limelite Jazz Band Showcase

Occasionally acts will showcase for work from events companies, wedding planners, venues etc etc.Below is a blog written by one of our jazz swing acts about a showcase held a month or so ago.

You can get more details about Limelight here  http://www.lmmuk.com/band/Limelite or call the LMM office for best prices and further information on this great jazz swing act for weddings and events.

“To celebrate our recent rebranding, Limelite hosted a party for the events industry, featuring our selection of line-ups, at the St Pancras Grand Champagne & Oyster Bar.

The event took three months to put together – and felt like planning a wedding! So, with venue booked, musicians and singers ready, food and drink ordered and guest list full, we arrived at the Grand at 3pm.

The next three hours were a near-military operation involving setting up instruments, lights, PA, and the all-important recording and video equipment, as we were filming the whole evening. Soon, we were ready to sound check. The fortunate, but unsuspecting diners in the restaurant listened to a few numbers as microphones, monitors and mixes were checked and rechecked.

Demo CDs were laid out; a bowl of limes carefully prepared for our guests’ business cards, and it was time to head to our dressing room – cleverly disguised as the Grand’s on-site meeting room. Almost as important as getting the equipment ready is getting the make up just right! And for the boys? Black suits and our trademark green ties.

Before long, the guests were arriving for three hours of meeting, greeting and entertainment. It was time to step into the Limelite! The day and evening ran like clockwork – thank goodness for forward planning and for the trusty black clipboard! A great time was had by all and lots of interest ensued from guests and diners alike.”

Customer Testimonials-People Say The Nicest Things About LMM

Live Music Management Ltd

Live Music Management Ltd

We were in a meeting with an events company last week who have used LMM to book a couple of things (Live Karaoke bands aka bandeoke or rockaoke and After Dark amongst them) and we were trying to find the right words to describe what we were offering (and in turn what the client wanted.)

They were looking for a nationwide team of DJs for a project they are about to run.

It went without saying that they needed professional, reliable DJs who would show up and do a good job,be able to work within a tight brief and create a great atmosphere but what else was it they were looking for?

Its a bland description and many people would avoid using the word. They would try and say something more business like but LMM just came out with it and said “You need to use nice people.”

“That’s exactly right…you have totally nailed it!” said our friends at the events agency.

I guess we have built our business on this one little word…..use nice people and get good results. It’s nice to be nice!

“Hi Alex,

Just thought I’d let you know we though Soul Dedication we great when we saw them rehearse. Very nice people too!

Katherine April 2011 (Bride to be booked Soul Dedication for her wedding.
