Australia Day 2011

Australia Day 2011

As many regular readers will know LMM have long connections with Australia and we have been booking Australia Day events in the UK for over twelve years.Back in the late 90s when we first started booking Australia Day parties with live music and DJs in the Walkabout bars (at the time there were just a handful of Walkabouts based in London) the audience were always homesick Aussies and the celebration was not widely known outside the Aussie ex pat community.

Well quite a lot has changed in the last ten years.

Australia Day has assumed the status of a mini St Patricks Day with many people who only have a tenuous connection with Australia joining in the celebrations which they have learned about back packing or through their many Aussie mates based in the UK for work or University reasons. The success and nationwide spread of the Walkabout chain has greatly helped this and we are aware of many people who go to the Australia Day night in their local town just because they are aware of it through the Aussie staff in their local Walkabout.

Anyway much like on St Pats day when everyone becomes an honorary Irishman and we all drink guinness and dance to jogs and reels tomorrow is a day for donning the Aussie face paint, draping yourself in an Aussie flag, grabbing a Crownie or a VB or a Fosters and partying to the sounds of a great live band or DJ in the Walkabout.

Shepherds Bush Walkabout and Temple are the epi centres of the celebration and you can expect both venues to be busy from mid day with live bands all day but we have events in all the Walkabout venues so check http://www.walkabout.eu.com/  for details.

Brainscape Live At Sheffield Walkabout

Friday, January 21st, 2011

While the boys from Brainscape take a well deserved rest back in their native Brazil LMM thought we would take this opportunity to pay homage to this great band.

Since first working for LMM several years ago they have gone from strength to strength and they are a band who gain fans at every venue they play.

They arrive back in the UK next week and will be ready to rock the nation again with their mixed set list which extends from awesome versions of pop and rock tunes like the version of Blink 182 “All The Small Things “, caught on the mobile phone video, above to funky party songs.

We have sent this great band to so many shows where the client and/or venue have asked for them back.

At LMM we really rate this band….listen to the way they go into the Shania Twain song in the video above..tease the audience…and then go into a rocked up version of “livin On A Prayer” …sheer genius!  Watch the video above for great versions of Queen songs etc and remember this is just a video taken on a mobile phone by the DJ at the Sheffield Walkabout. He does a great job but he is not the BBC outside broadcast unit with fancy equipment….this is raw and live…undoctored and brilliant.

To book Brainscape either call the LMM office or email info@lmmuk.com    To browse their web page check out Brainscape here or browse the rock and pop section of the LMM site for more options on great live bands to hire

You can see great live bands at the Walkabout in Sheffield every Saturday night where DJ Lenny Sultana spins the records and the bands get the place rocking….if you are ever in Sheffield call in for a great night out.A great band and a great DJ..what more could you want?

Australian Flood Relief Appeal

Australian Flood Relief Appeal

LMM are working alongside Adam the manager of Shepherds Bush Walkabout to organise a charity relief event at Shepherds Bush Walkabout on Saturday January 29.

Our last big charity event for the forest fires was a huge success in raising money for the victims . See blog http://www.lmmuk.com/agentblog/?p=13

We have had an amazing response from our Australian acts based in London who have offered their time and talent for the day for free in order to provide us with an incredible line up which consists of some of the best rock pop party bands in the UK plus a couple of very talented original acts. There will be some more acts almost certainly added to the line up before we launch but we are overwhelmed by the generosity of the acts so far…most of them will have to rush to other shows after performing at Shepherds Bush Walkabout.

Tim is in touch with Australia’s Channel 9 station (the biggest TV station in Australia) who did a piece on our last event and we look forward to some good TV coverage of the event.

Start times are TBC

Soul Dedication-Great Wedding Band

Soul Dedication-Great Wedding Band

Soul Dedication are a great function band based up in Cheshire and available for wedding bookings in 2011 from LMM.This review came through today and speaks volumes about the quality of this great covers act.Go to the Soul Dedication page http://www.lmmuk.com/band/Soul+Dedication in order to ge more info or call the LMM office for the personal touch….we love to hear from you!!

“Alex, happy new year to you.Sorry it is a little late,

Just wanted to thank you for your professionalism when we came to you very late to book the band for my daughter’s wedding. The booking procedure was so slick, we were very impressed.

Also wanted to give you feedback on the band’s performance. However I guess you are already aware of how fabulous they are.

They were superb, very professional, and gifted musicians. They enhanced the party.

So many people stated they would book them if arranging a celebration. We were delighted, especially when they performed At Last for the bride and groom’s first dance, Clarissa’s voice was mesmerising.

Please pass on my thanks and good wishes for the future to the band.

 Thank you again.

Lee Evans Act Was Ruined-Anecdote Corner!

Lee Evans-Nice Chap

Lee Evans-Nice Chap

Just been watching the very popular and very funny Lee Evans on TV tonight and it reminded me of the show we played with him at Nottingham University back in the early 1990s as he was just beginning to get a name for himself.

Back then I was playing in a function band and as he was a comedian just walking in and doing his spot prior to us playing on stage we offered to let him use our PA system.

This would have been fine except he didn’t have sound man and we ussually did our sound from the stage as we were playing. With this and the fact that Lee has a manic stage prescence and wild microphone technique the sound for Lee Evans was pretty bad and most of his jokes were lost on a drunk and pretty loud University student audience.

Our keyboard player decided to come to the rescue. He crawled on stage and sat on his knees behind Lee fiddling with the sound desk and trying to get the sound right.

It just got worse and as it did Lee became more and more extreme with the visual comedy which he does so well.

By the time the keyboard player had sorted the sound out Lee Evans had done five minutes of the most extreme visual, manic comedy I have ever seen.

I’m pretty sure as he tours stadiums around the world he will still have nightmares about this gig which must have been one of the worst performances of his life (through no fault of his own….how can a comedian work with poor sound?)

He was a lovely fella as well.We shared a dressing room before the gig and had a good chat.He shot off pretty sharp after leaving the stage though!

The Blanks At Walkabout Lincoln

Wednesday, November 24th, 2010

Travelling to Lincoln to see The Blanks I passed through Broughton which is an ex pit village.I recall my Dad saying that in the 1950s when he played in rock and roll bands there was a working mens club in the town that had entertainment seven nights per week usually featuring a rock and roll band plus variety acts.It was always packed.

I was reminded of this when i arrived at Lincoln Walkabout to find 500 students patiently waiting for The Blanks who have an act not dissimilar to one of the variety acts you might have found at that club sixty years ago.

This is not a critiscm of The Blanks…far from it.

They have found a way of freshening up an art form forged by Barber Shop quartets and acts like The Four Freshmen back in the 1940s and 1950s and making it relevant for todays generation.

That they are Teds Band from cult American Comedy show Scrubs which is much loved and missed (although they have stopped making the show it is on endless repeat on E4) has much to do with the audience discovering them but there was a genuine warmth and love in the audience which goes beyond mere celebrity.

The Blanks started the show with some self penned humorous accapella tracks and then progressed into covers of rock and pop tunes.

Their versions of “the four best rock songs of all time” which included The Who’s “Who Are You” and “Dont Fear The Reaper” by Blue Oyster Cult (songs which would be ancient history for this audience except for the endless rediscoveries on Itunes and shows like Glee) went down a treat as did Maniac complete with dancing prop.

For me  the most magical moment was “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” a song from a 1930s movie which had the students singing along and lighting up lighters and holding up mobile phones as if it was their favourite tune of all time…..any act that can produce this response in an audience raised on hip hop and grime, metal and dub step deserves every plaudit in the book.

I have copied a You Tube clip above which hit the internet within 30 minutes of the guys coming off stage in Wolverhampton Walkabout….its not great quality but you can hear the quality of the band and the atmosphere in the crowd.

The version of Hey Ya with Ukelele and voice had everyone in a loved up mood too.

The Blanks brought with them the proffessionalism that is honed by years on the American stage and playing Las Vegas Theatres but they were also humble and lovely people in all our dealings with them.

The Walkabout Bars have often been first in discovering cult student favourites (Dr Karl Kennedys first UK show was at Sheffield Walkabout some six years ago) and we are proud of our ability to keep ahead of the trend in this regard. It won’t be the last you hear of The Blanks and,of course,Walkabout will continue to bring the best in live music and DJs to its valued customers.

The Blanks-We Salute You!!

Take That Tribute-Steve Wright In The Afternoon

Steve Wright Take That Interview Endorses Take That Tribute

Steve Wright Take That Interview Endorses Take That Tribute

When Take That appeared on Steve Wright in the afternoon the conversation got around to Tribute bands.

There are many Take That tributes on the market but the one that LMM like to use the most was the Tribute which Take That themselves endorsed with the words “We’ve seen them….they’re better singers than us,better dancers than us and better looking than us!!”

When the biggest band in the UK give you that kind of review then you know that you are doing something right!

OKTC Party Band At Sheffield Walkabout

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

OKTC are a Yorkshire based party band who have worked for LMM for almost ten years now. They have always been a favourite act in the LMM office.

They are a great set of guys and they bring the party with them everytime they step on the stage.

As regulars at Walkabout bars throughout the North Of England they have proved to be a popular band with city centre audiences but they are equally in demand for parties, weddings, functions and charity events throughout Yorkshire,Cheshire and the Midlands.

You can see them in action on this You Tube clip which was taken on a phone camera last Saturday when they played at Sheffield Walkabout. The enthusiasm on stage is infectious and they went down a treat with the audience at this 1000 capacity Walkabout bar on Calver Street,Sheffield.

Some of my favourite memories of bands at Walkabout include OKTC on their annual pilgrimage down to the Newquay Walkabout which they played every Summer from 2001 to 2005.It was a combination lads weekend away and serious partying on stage (the guys in the band don’t really drink and so no more than two pints were imbibed all weekend.)With the atmosphere generated by the great Newquay Walkabout crowd you didn’t really need alcohol.Happy days!

If you want further details about OKTC for your wedding, party or evet please call the LMM office on 08454 900515 .We are able to give you good prices and availability for local dates in late 2010/2011.

A Level Results Night-Party Time!!

School Students Ready To party?

School Students Ready To party?

LMM supply DJs to city centre venues throughout the UK and last night was one of the biggest nights in the calendar.

If you are a student,a parent or just someone interested in the news, you can’t have failed to have seen the bulletins about the record A Level results  and the scramble for University places. What didn’t feature so highly in the news is that for many eighteen year olds last night was a big night of celebration or commiseration in towns throughout the UK and that our DJs would have been helping them dance through to dawn on an evening which will, hopefully ,be remembered forever.

So to anyone who got their results yesterday….congratulations….hope you got the results you needed and that a job or uni place awaits and ,finally, hope you are not too hungover!
