How To Pass A DJ Audition

how to pass a dj audition

how to pass a dj audition

At Live Music Management we hold regular DJ auditions in various locales around the UK. These are for our party DJs but also for wedding DJs and mobile discos. We like to see everyone and build up a relationship with the act before we give them a booking. We are constantly on the look out for new talent for night clubs , parties and events and there is rarely a day that passes without someone calling the Live Music Management to see if we have any work for a DJ.

The format for our DJ auditions tends to always be the same. We ask people to turn up and meet with one of our reps and then to perform a twenty minute DJ audition. It’s the same format that we have been running for the best part of fifteen years and we know that with this style of audition it is rare that we miss on real talent and it is easy to wheedle out the DJs who will clearly not meet with the standards of Live Music Management.

The DJ auditions usually take place in one of our High Street venues like Walkabout or Bar Risa. Very often they will be run at a time when the venue is closed or quiet. It can be quite an intimidating atmosphere , even for an experienced jock.

Often we are asked in advance how to pass a DJ audition. Many of the DJs auditioning for us have not had to go through this experience with new clients in the past. We had one night club DJ arrogantly tell us that he never did auditions. When he decided to attend the audition it was clear that he was not very experienced and had been bluffing about his abilities.

These are our top tips on How to pass a DJ audition.

1. Be friendly , be dressed appropriate for the venue , be punctual.

2. Check your levels before starting your set. Often DJs will start playing music based on the previous DJs levels which may have been way out. Make sure the mic is not distorting. Make sure the music sounds right. Wander around the venue . Check the volume is okay. Check that the sound is fine.

3. Don’t worry too much about repeating a track someone else has played. Play your twenty minutes as if you are the star of the show and it’s the heat of the night with a packed dance floor.

4. If it’s appropriate to the venue and your style then use the mic (almost all the nights LMM book require mic work ) use it to stamp your authority on the room. Don’t talk over every song. Use the mic as if the venue is busy. Incorporate the name of the venue into your speech.

5. Throw in a little set piece mash up or clever mix but don’t worry about cramming every trick in the book into twenty minutes. Maybe five minutes of tricks would be perfect.

6. Be confident!

If you would like details of how to audition for Live Music Management then email your details to info@lmmuk.com with phone numbers and dates when you are available in the week (ie If you have Saturdays currently available then we will be more interested than if you are just available on Mondays) and don’t forget to send your phone number. We are particularly looking for quality London wedding DJs

Wedding After Party

Wedding After Party

Wedding After Party

One of the key wedding trends of the 2000′s has been the wedding after party.

When Kate and William married they held a reception which was attended by family and friends. They then retreated to a private quarter in Buckingham Palace where the wedding after party took place for an intimate circle of friends who share Prince William and Kate’s tastes in music and dancing (which by all accounts included some key hip hop and chart anthems and , LMM have a first hand account , The Killers Mr Brightside , Prince Williams choice!)

The wedding after party is now firmly ingrained in the UK wedding landscape with many clients asking Live Music Management for information about wedding DJ’s that can play sets aimed at the family in the early part of the evening and a  more selective crowd later in the night. Not all of these after wedding parties change venue for the after show but some of them do . Other  wedding after parties accommodate the older guests but make it clear that post 11pm or post midnight belongs to the younger crowd with the preferred style of music ,whether that be indie , RnB , Hip Hop or dance , being played in the later set. They hire a great party DJ for this part of the evening.

Live Music Management are ideally situated to be able to provide the best DJ’s for this style of event as we began as suppliers to the UK High Street club and bar market and we have DJs working in every type of High Street nightclub and party bar. Our nightclub DJs are widely regarded as the best in the industry and are in demand both in the UK and Europe for night club bookings. Many of them have TV , radio and festival experience as well as wedding DJ experience.

Live Music Management have also noticed a trend towards chill out after wedding parties with acoustic bands being booked to provide a laid back sound scape of either background music or music to sing a long to. Often this is emulating the popular chalet parties which people have enjoyed when they have been skiing in the smart European resorts. Live Music Management have a number of bands who play in the ski resorts and are comfortable offering this style of wedding after party.

If you would like further information about wedding after parties then you can call the Live Music Management events team on 08454 900515 or email info@lmmuk.com   we would love to hear from you.

DJ’s Are Cool For Weddings

Cool DJs For Weddings

Cool DJs For Weddings

Alongside the very many clients that book a wedding band as their wedding entertainment is an increasing number of clients who are looking to hire a “cool” DJ for their wedding.

Just yesterday I spoke to a client who was taking some steps to ensure that he booked the right DJ for his wedding. When I asked what kind of DJ he wanted he hesitated and then said, “It’s easier to tell you what I don’t want….I don’t want a wedding DJ ! ” I knew immediately what he meant.

When I think of  a typical mobile  DJ I picture Peter Kay in the John Smiths adverts that ran several years ago. A cheesy DJ playing cheesy music and talking over many of the tracks. Over the years we at Live Music Management have seen hundreds of these Old School DJs at audition nights , and indeed playing in hotels and weddings (not booked by LMM I am glad to say.)

It saddens me that a great many clients will accept the first DJ offered to them by the hotel (sometimes as an add on to the wedding package and sometimes even as a supposed freebie) particularly as a great many DJs linked to hotels are of poor quality. They haven’t had to keep up to date with DJing trends , they haven’t had to compete in a competitive market place and for many of them their Saturday night DJ wedding set is a bit of pin money and a chance to keep up the skills they haven’t refreshed since 1980 when they last did a club gig. Alternately the hotel wedding DJ gig is a starting off point for DJs who are just learning the trade.

The trend towards using “cool DJ’s” is borne out by a recent article written by Mindy Weiss, wedding planner to the stars, who writes “even if you don’t have one at the reception  you will want to hire one for the after show….everyone has an after show party nowadays.”

So DJ’s are cool for weddings but only if you book the right DJ. With most of the generation of Brides and Grooms now getting married being of the age of the clubbing DJ i.e having grown up ,met and danced the night away in proper clubs and party bars with quality DJ’s and perhaps even holidayed in Ibiza or Ayanapa or attended festivals such as The Big Chill or Creamfields why would they want to hire a DJ whose idea of a top tune is Aggadoo and whose party piece is stopping the music so the audience can sing the chorus of Hi Ho Silver Lining?

Young couples expect more from a DJ than this and Live Music Management are a company whose experience in servicing the night club industry means that they are the number one wedding DJ agency who understand that there is more to DJing than playing YMCA and Abba.

Wedding Music Tips

wedding music tips

wedding music tips

There are a million and one things to do and plan when putting together the perfect wedding day. Live Music Management book entertainment into around a thousand weddings per annum and every one is individual and different closely reflecting the personalities of the Bride and Groom .

In our view one of the most important parts of a wedding reception is the music chosen regardless of whether this is provided by a wedding DJ or a wedding band. It is quite likely that the music at your wedding will be remembered long after the wedding breakfast is forgotten. It will certainly change the atmosphere more dramatically than the flowers or the table napkins will. That’s why many Brides and Grooms and professional wedding planners  choose Live Music Management in order to ensure the right wedding entertainment is delivered to their big night.

We would like to offer a few simple wedding music tips that might help you make the decisions about what kind of music to book for your wedding.

DJ’s For Weddings

There are a number of advantages to booking a Deejay for a wedding as opposed to hiring live music. For one, in most cases , it will cost less money. Secondly a DJ will have a wider choice of music and be able to deal with requests more effectively than the majority of wedding bands. However there are a couple of things to be wary of. For instance don’t just plump for the DJ offered as a free of charge addition to your wedding package by the venue. Check out the quality of the DJ beforehand. Not all DJ’s are the same. In Live Music Management’s experience the majority of DJs holding hotel wedding residencies are not particularly good and a bad DJ is sure to ruin your wedding party (especially if that’s the only entertainment you have booked on the night.)

Bands For Weddings

When considering what kind of band style you would like for your wedding think carefully about your wedding guests and the atmosphere you are planning to create. The wedding band will change this atmosphere the minute they start playing. We have hundreds of testimonials from happy clients saying “the band created a great atmosphere at our wedding….everyone was dancing all night” and “people have not stopped texted me to tell me how good the band was” etc etc.

Do you want your guests up on the dance floor. If so you probably want to hire a rock pop party band or a soul funk party band dependant upon your own personal tastes. If your wedding is going to be a quieter affair then we have acoustic bands available. If you want a glamorous , vintage atmosphere then maybe consider hiring a swing band. If the evening is about conversation and great food then maybe something from our classical music section will fit the bill. If you are looking for quirky and unusual then there are a number of options in our unique acts section. If your friends are all up for a laugh then you might book a Rockaoke aka bandeoke or live karaoke band .

Live Music Management have hundreds of options available for your wedding and we hope these wedding music tips have been helpful . Of course our office team are able to help you choose the right direction for your wedding music and we are available Monday to Friday in office hours for a telephone consultation.

DJ Auditions

DJ Auditions

DJ Auditions

Over the past fifteen or so years since Live Music Management formed as the DJ and band agency in charge of booking entertainment for the, then just emerging, Walkabout chain we have auditioned literally hundreds of DJs.

Live Music Management hold regular DJ auditions nights in various parts of the UK. We are looking for the very best club style DJs , the perfect party DJs and great mobile DJs with quality equipment and attitude. It is fair to say that we reject more DJs than we take on.

At present we are particularly keen to find quality DJs who are available on Saturday nights. We are lucky to have a team of relief DJs available for last minute emergencies on Friday and Saturday nights but we are always looking to expand this roster as availability on the weekend is limited for good DJs especially since the majority of work is now centred around the weekend. If you are a great party DJ and you are available on Saturdays (or if you have a friend who is available on Saturdays) then please contact the LMM office now by emailing a CV through to info@lmmuk.com and we will arrange to see you.

We are also constantly on the look out to grow our roster of mobile DJs for weddings, parties and events. We are especially keen to meet with some new London wedding DJs for possible bookings over the next few years. If you are a quality mobile disco guy then please get in touch by emailing info@lmmuk.com Don’t forget to include some details of previous places worked, of equipment you own and , importantly , of the rates you charge.

Live Music Management are one of the UKs largest DJ agencies. If you are a quality DJ then it is going to be of benefit for you to be on our radar. However it is worth baring in mind that if you are only available on a Tuesday night then it is incredibly unlikely that we are going to be able to offer you work. The key thing is availability on Friday and Saturday nights.

We look forward to your emails.

LMM DJ Matt De Santos Picks Up 97,000 Twitter Followers In Two Weeks

Wednesday, March 27th, 2013
matt de santos

matt de santos

Live Music Management DJ Matt De Santos is, what we call in the office, a good all rounder. He hosts stage games on his ever popular Mad Monday nights in Hanley  Walkabout, he works student nights including a very successful Thursday in Birmingham Walkabout as a party dj , he plays dance music on his club bookings. He has hosted several Radio shows on commercial radio and is a local celebrity in the North West area for his Wish FM shows. He even does the occasional bar mitzvah for LMM and gets massive praise for this. He is capable of doing pretty much any kind of nightclub DJ booking and doing it well but we never expected him to become such an online sensation.

Here is the story in Matts own words.

Just to let you know I’ve had a crazy couple of weeks since the release of a remix I did of Emilie Sande’s Next To Me.

This got permission to be played in both North and South America and I’ve had a phenomenal reaction on my social networking pages. I went from a handful of people on my Soundcloud account to almost 1000 in the last week. But it’s my twitter account that has blown me away. As I send this I’m on 97,000 + followers!

I’ll  give you the links for people to listen and download below.

twitter – @mattdesantosdj

Whilst Matt De Santos has some way to go yet before he becomes the new Gangham Style of Harlem Shake sensation it is amazing what can happen online in just a short period of time. The remix has propelled him into the rarefied air of those with close to  100,000 twitter followers (he is expecting to exceed this in a few days) which gives him a great audience for anything he does next and whatever he does next is bound to be brilliant and exciting  cause that’s the kind of DJ he is!

New Years Eve DJ

New Years Eve DJ

New Years Eve DJ

I am writing this during Easter week and , despite the snow laying six inches deep outside my office window, some people might think it is way too early to be planning the hiring of a DJ for New Years Eve however the time scale is just about perfect if you want to ensure that you have maximum choice for your New Years Eve DJ.

Hotel chains and ticketed venues tend to start planning their New Years Eve DJ and Christmas events in Spring in order to have the brochures and tickets printed ready for sale from April/May onwards. This means that many quality DJs get booked up well in advance for New Years Eve. Indeed Live Music Management have some repeat New Years Eve DJ bookings which automatically get confirmed from year to year.

This is not to say that options are limited for New Years Eve DJ bookings and it has been the case in the last few years that some venues and private parties have left it until very late it the day to book their New Years Eve DJ. Some companies and individuals have left booking a DJ for NYE until December.

As a DJ agency with a few hundred quality DJs on our books Live Music Management will always have an option for New Years Eve DJ bookings but the early booker benefits from more choice which allows for better rates with more locally based DJs, better quality (or DJs more suited to the night) and peace of mind knowing you can relax as the New Years Eve party you have planned is all sorted.

Live Music Management are an agency with over thirteen years experience of booking New Years Eve DJs and DJs based throughout the UK. We are the agency trusted by high street bars such as Walkabout, Bar Risa, TPs, Tom Peppers, Wahoo, Camden Dingwalls, Highlight  and Vice Versa with their DJ bookings. We also book DJs into holiday parks and hotel venues including some of Londons top hotels such as The Landsdowne and Baglioni. If you have attended a Jonguers comedy club night you will have been entertained by one of the Live Music Management DJ team.

Our events team are on hand to help and advice best options for your big New Years Eve party……..and remember it’s never too early to book a New Years Eve DJ!!

DJs Complaining

DJs Complaining

DJs Complaining

Live Music Managements attention was drawn today to this new (at least to us) twitter thing “Djs Complaining.”

It rings a large number of bells to the chaps in the Live Music Management office but before any irrate party DJs , mobile DJs or nightclub DJs get on the blower and tell us off let me explain something.

The ordinary (that is non superstar) working DJ like every other working person in the current “age of austerity” (copyright Cameron!) has plenty to complain about and as the entertainment agency that looks after the diaries of many DJs Live Music Management are always going to be on the receiving end of some of this. Let me state we do not mind a bit of complaining. Your DJ agency is the place to complain. We are here to listen and ,perhaps,to help….or at least to be a sympathetic ear. The beauty of this twitter feed is that it airs the complaints of pampered DJs who have nothing to complain about!

In our experience superstar name DJs complain about everything. Like Elton John when he called his London based manager to complain that there was a high wind in New York which was keeping him awake there is nothing that the Superstar DJ cannot complain about.

Check out these

Thank you Malmaison Hotels UK for having me waiting 42 minutes to download a 8 meg file from one of your guests using your internet..

Limos aren’t that much fun when you are the only person in them

Dustin Zahn@dustinzahn

Burger at Gordon Ramsey T5. Obviously decent beef but equally obviously bun had previously been frozen. Fresh bread complimentary tho… WTF

Zomboy@Zomboy_music

I bloody hate 777s

There are a ton of these pampered pooches complaining about leg room on airplanes. What’s wrong with them? Most people have to pay to get a plane you moron. Most DJs would kill to be able to play in the worlds top night clubs. Most people would love to earn the dosh you earn for playing records….listen to yourself and remember how you felt when you got your first paid job!

What To Look For When Using An Entertainment Agent

Wednesday, February 20th, 2013
Entertainment Agency

Entertainment Agency

What to look for when using an entertainment agent?

I could answer this with a simple one word answer….integrity….and I wouldn’t be far off the mark but of course that wouldn’t make for much of a blog.

First of all I must declare Live Music Managements interest in answering the question of what to look for when using an entertainment agent. Live Music Management are an entertainment agency booking bands and DJ’s into events, parties, weddings, nightclubs and holiday parks etc etc. So we are answering the question with some degree of bias. We believe entertainment booking agencies to be, fundamentally, a good thing.

An entertainment agency with integrity works for both the act and the client to ensure that all parties are happy with the arrangements and details of an engagement. From the offset an agent with a great deal of knowledge of his roster and field will be able to advise the right band for your function or the perfect mobile DJ for your wedding. He will want the act and the event to be a perfect marriage so that all parties have a great evening. A good entertainment agent will know the going rate for a job and charge this rate making his cut from the long standing arrangement with the act with the act happy to pay commission as the agent gets them a volume of work which would not be achievable if working alone.

Having said all of the above we would then say that these are the things to look for when using an entertainment agent.

Does the agency have long established , repeat booking clients?

For instance Live Music Management have been supplying DJs and party bands to the Walkabout Bars, Butlins Holiday Centres, The UK Military, Marks and Spencers (through a third party events company) , Wahoo Bars and many more for a decade plus (in the case of the Walkabout we have been sole supplier for over fourteen years.) This is important because weddings are one off bookings. There is very little that a client can do once the event has gone. They can’t choose to not book with them again as they will ,in most circumstances, never use a live band or DJ again. Live Music Management supply literally thousands of acts to repeat bookings every year. Every single one of them goes off without a hitch (or we deal with the problems on the day to ensure that a suitable replacement is offered.) We know our acts inside and out and soon get to wheedle out the unprofessional players who ,inevitably, litter the industry.

Is the agency a member of the Agents Association Of Great Britain?

This is the only organisation that legitimate agencies can belong to in the UK.It upholds the highest level of conduct amongst agents and we would suggest to be suspicious of any act not a member of the Agents Association.

Does the agency have a registered company name and address?

The unfortunate thing about the internet is that it has allowed a number of one man band, bedroom agencies enter into the marketplace without the same scruples as larger companies such as Live Music Management. Some of them look legitmate but don’t have offices, company registration and may not prove to be as accountable if anything goes wrong.

Live Music Management hold all customer deposits in a client account untill after the date of the function. We contract by legally binding, Agents Association contract.Live Music Management have a tried and tested confirmations system and a brilliant two man emergency phone call service available 24 hours and seven days per week.
