Last night I was sat with well over 300 hundred  diners, including a great many Walkabout and Bar Risa managers and head office staff, tucking into a Christmas dinner with all the trimmings watching a drag queen compere dressed in Xmas gear getting the audience into the Xmas spirit whilst Whams Last Christmas played over the PA system.

This wasn’t a surreal dream. It was the Highlight Christmas launch where staff and friends of the Highlight venues are invited to sample what’s in store for this years Xmas shows.

We arrived at the Highlight on Broad Street in Birmingham to be greeted by the aforementioned drag act and a staircase covered in snow and draped in Christmas decorations. A glass of mulled wine was offered to us by friendly staff dressed in festive white whilst a photo opportunity with a reindeer (not a real one!!) and the drag queen was available. We took to our white table cloth seating and had waitresses in attendance to take drink orders. Our Xmas dinners arrived shortly after whilst LMM DJ Ben McClaughlin entertained us with xmas songs and a close up magician strolled around the tables and our drag queen,Jackie Frost ,mingled with the crowds.

The stage show featured comedy and magic and was up to the high standards of the Highlight shows.

The after show disco presented by LLMs DJ Ben ,one of Broad Streets best,was superb.

A great night was had by all.

With many live bands and DJs playing at Christmas events over the next month (some of them starting this weekend) we have had a quick survey as to the most requested Xmas song….our survey says “Mariah Carey…All I Want For Xmas Is You” is the most requested Christmas song of 2010 (by clients) so far…we will keep you posted as guests make requests.

I have copied below the Top 5o Old Fashioned (or Classic depending on your point of view!!) Christmas Pop Songs.Many of these are jazz swing favourites from the 1940s/50s and 60s which for an older generation probably remains the classic period for Christmas tunes what with great movies like White Xmas and all the singers like Bing Crosby,Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra making this style their own.

For my generation the 1970s probably had the upper hand with tracks like Merry Xmas Everybody and It’ll Be Lonely This Xmas etched in our memories from many performances on Xmas Top Of The Pops amd their seemingly endless runs  on rotation in shopping malls and retail outlets.

For the generation now in their late 50s and 60s it would be the Phil Spector Chrstmas tunes which ticked the box.

I guess it makes sense that Mariah Careys track is so popular as it harkens back to the Spector Xmas era whilst offering the production values needed to set a dancefloor alight in the 2000′s.It’s probably the last truly great Xmas track with X Factor dominating the Xmas chart its been a while since anyone issued a brilliant Christmas song.

Postscript to this blog.

I used to work in HMV in Sheffield (along with Pete McKee the Sheffield artist and Richard Hawley the singer/songwriter) There seems to be nary a year goes by without Richard Hawley being interviewed and mentioning the special torture which comes from being subjected to Xmas songs for eight hours per day as we all were back in the late eighties/early nineties.

This was,not to put too fine a point on it,our personal ‘Nam.

It was survival of the fittest when NOW THATS WHAT I CALL XMAS went on the decks in late October and stayed in heavy rotation till the January sales.Even now when I hear a sleigh bell I shudder and try to close my eardrums lest I am subjected to Shaking Stevens singing Merry Xmas Everyone.

The excrutiating horror that is Chris De Burgh singing A Spaceman Came A Traveling can still,nearly twenty years later,ruin my Christmas.

The list above of top ten christmas songs includes some of the very songs which graced Now Thats What I Call Xmas.Why you might ask do I list them.Well,for one,I was outvoted by some of the LMM DJs.Secondly the John Lennon and Slade Xmas songs are such great songs that repeated listening didn’t,quite,manage to kill them.

If I only had to name one Xmas track for inclusion in this blog it would be The Christmas Song By Nat King Cole.Thats if I was in a Chestnuts roasting by an open fire kind of mood.

If I was in a euphoric “twelve tequilas and a galloon of beer” kind of mood I would have to plump for Slade.

But,truthfully,if someone sticks the Phil Spector Xmas CD on the decks on Xmas day I will be happy.

Snowing like a demon-no problem!!!!!

Okay I don’t want to jinx anything.As I write this there is still two inches of ice compacted snow outside my window and snow is falling heavily in some parts of the UK but I wanted to thank our acts for their efforts over the last few days in getting to their gigs in treacherous conditions.

Whilst the chairman of Eurostar is apologising for his train service breaking down in the Eurotunnel at the first sign of snow LMM acts should congratulate themselves for making the extra effort and  making sure that everyone gets the entertainment they have booked during the Xmas period.

With over 200 hundred acts working on Friday Dec 18 2009 as the snow began to fall in many parts of the UK and traffic reports stating that roads were impassable and the UK was coming to a standstill we were rightly worried about delivering our acts to the venues and two of the LMM team were on hand with the emergency phones to ensure we could help where possible.

As it happened a couple or acts were,understandably,late but everyone turned up in time for their shows and clients were all happy.

Special mention needs to be made of the following.

Sugar Rush played a duo show for us at Oldham Wahoo club and played a great set of sing a long acoustic covers.They then legged it up to Middlesboro Walkabout where the drummer and bassplayer were already waiting and soundchecked ready to play a mega party set.Despite black ice,snow banks,traffic accidents and Motorways with backed up traffic the Sugar Rush band were on stage at the allotted time and played a fantastic set.

Platform Six were up in Edinburgh on Thursday Dec 17 and were due to fly back to Luton Friday morning in order to get their van and drive to Sheffield ready for a 3 oclock soundcheck at Ponds Forge for Irwin Mitchells Law firm.Should have been simple.

They got to the airport to find all flights were cancelled.So they rushed to the train station and got on the first train to London.They got off the train at Stevenage (because the train was running so slow they didn’t dare risk going to St Pancreas and getting the train across to luton) and got a taxi to Luton. Picking up the van they set off in a snow storm only to break down 30 minutes on route!

With a local mechanic on board they got on the road again only to get a flat tyre outside of Sheffield!!

Despite all of this Platform Six were on stage on time and the client reported that they were one of the best bands they had ever seen.They went down so well that an immediate re-booking came in for the December 2010 party came in on Monday.

Well done boys…..real troupers.

Special mention also needs to be made of The Jacks who made it to their wedding at Bovey Castle in Devon despite shredding a tyre whilst sliding backwards down a hill road covered in black ice!!

Nat King Bing And The Kings Of Schwing plus DJ Johnny Gibson made it to their show in rural East Humberside despite zero visibility oon the motorways with the freezing fog and snow blizzards.

So just a little note of thanks to all the bands and DJs who really went to some length to ensure that no ones Xmas party or night out in a Walkabout,Rewind,Jongleurs or Bar Risa venue was ruined.
