st georges day events

Happy St Georges Day to all our friends and colleagues (and to my brother in law who shares a birthday with this date.)

St Patricks Day has become a huge excuse for everyone to claim some Irish ancestry and enjoy a night of guinness and Irish music and Australia Day is rapidly becoming a celebration throughout the UK as backpackers and Aussie ex pats spread the word about this day of celebration. St Georges Day is less widely celebrated. In the events calendar it falls short of July 4th in terms of its nationwide uptake as a party date.

This said we do have some events happening this evening for St Georges Day.

If you check out the listings of your local Walkabout bar many of them will be celebrating with a party DJ playing some great British anthems . We also have a private corporate event this evening with a St Georges Day theme. Our mobile DJ will be playing a celebration of all that is good in British music taking in The Beatles and The Stones and running right through to Tinie Tempah and Jessie J. There will also be a Britpop covers band on board to take the party home.

Happy St Georges Day.

Australia Day Shepherds Bush Walkabout The Bondis

Wednesday, April 4th, 2012

As Anzac Day approaches (wednesday April 25 is a public holiday in Australia and widely celebrated by Ex pat Aussies living in the UK) we felt it was time to look back to Australia Day 2012 and a new video which captures the excitement of Australia Day in a Walkabout venue.

The Bondis are one of Live Music Managements favourite acts. They have worked for us for ten years and have held residencies and performed one night stands in Walkabout venues throughout that time. Besides this they are in great demand for events and weddings.

One of the regular band bookings over the past ten years has been the Shepherds Bush Walkabout Australia Day concert. This all day event attracts thousands of ex pat Aussies and has a fantastic and exciting atmosphere. The video at the head of this page says far more than I can put into words.

If you are interested in booking a great Australian cover band then call the LMM office on 0845 900515

Happy Australia Day UK

Happy Australia Day to all the Live Music Management Aussie party bands and party DJs and to our Australian mates at the Walkabout bars…it’s going to be an awesome day!

LMM have a long relationship with Australia.

Founding director Timbo is originaly from the Gold Coast and began his working life in the UK playing piano in the very first Walkabout bar way back in the 1990s. I myself first set foot in a Walkabout back in 1998 and by 1999 I was working at Live Music Management building up a UK wide roster of cover bands and club DJs to book into the expanding Walkabout chain. We oversaw the opening of fifty Walkabout bars in the 2000′s and to this day continue to supply live acts and DJs into these great bars.

In this time we have made some fantastic pals from down under. Many of them remain within this exciting bar chain whilst some have moved back home (we will never be without a place to stay if we go on holiday to Australia!)

There are a number of LMM DJs who had their lives dramaticaly changed by working at the Walkabout bars and we remember well DJs like Graham Pozzi (Glasgow Walkabout), Pete Holmes AKA DJ Ice (Oldham/Manchester Walkabout) , Matt Alcock (Derby Walkabout)and John E (Blackpool Walkabout) who have all moved to Australia after getting a taste for the country from working in Walkabouts.

I am writing this on Australia Day 2012 having just seen the amazing refurb of the Temple Walkabout and Beach Bar which brings the Walkabout brand up to date with a fresh look and feel for the 21st Century. I would like to wish the staff and team at Temple and at all the other Walkabouts around the UK a great Australia Day…it’s going to be a lot of fun.

PS. Did you know our connection with Australia even runs to supplying live entertainment to Australia House ? Just last week one of our Aussie DJs Yax Man DJed a swanky event there..the latest of

Top Ten Pre And Post Gig Rituals!!!

Adam Ant

Adam Ant Took My Ticket!

Last night we went to see Adam Ant at the fantastic Rock City in Nottingham where our mobile DJ Jim Brown plays in the Cherry Lounge. After the gig we joined him for a quick drink and the manager asked us if we still had our ticket stubbs as Adam Ant wanted one for his collection (he collects a ticket from every show he plays)  and the venue had given all theirs away. Apart from the thrill of Adam Ant taking our own ticket for his collection it set my mind thinking about other post and pre gig band rituals.

1.Famously rock band Van Halen asked for M and Ms with all the brown ones taken out for their pre show rider!

2. One  band for hire that I worked with some years ago would take fishing tackle with them to every show . The wedding band would set up and fish a nearby river or lake before every wedding booking.

3. A latin band that Live Music Management have the pleasure to book spend ten minutes in the dressing room playing percussion before every gig in order to get in the mood.

4. One great Irish Band would always warm up in the dressing room by playing versions of old punk songs on fiddle and whistle.

5. Maria Carey apparently asked for puppy dogs to be available in her dressing room (surely this isn’t true!)

6. Group hugs…many function bands start of the set with a group hug…..well you got to share the love!

7. After the show I know many party bands that will keep a flyer as a memento of the gig.

8. Wearing some lucky item of clothing. Its for good reason that the drummer of that tribute band wears the same socks at every gig.

9.I was in a covers band playing events that named every item of equiptment with coded names and loaded the van using these obscure names to break the boredom…..so a guitar might be fetch me “chipmonk number five” or an amp would be “fetch me the central controller” It made loading the van a long old job for newcomers!

10. A pre show glass of port was the tipple for one wedding singer I knew. He never drank the stuff at any other time.

The Top Ten Best Britpop Anthems…..Ever!!

Oasis tribute band

Oasis tribute band

Continuing our series of top ten lists of the best anthems from various genres today we are proud to take you into the 1990s and our list of the best Britpop anthems from this era. It was a great time for guitar bands and although there were probably only three classic Britpop bands (Oasis,Pulp and Blur) that formed a recognisable music movement there were other great bands just on the edge of the scene time wise that fit nicely into a Britpop set.

Many of the Britpop classics still have a place in the sets of many of our wedding bands and people booking a function band  will often ask if the band play some of the Britpop anthems. Our party DJs working on retro nights like those at the Rewind bars will often drop a few of the Britpop classics in their set.

1.Oasis -Don’t Look Back In Anger

2.Pulp-Common People

3.The Las-There She Goes

4.Blur-Parklife

5.The Boo Radleys-Wake Up Boo

6.The Bluetones-Slight Return

7.The Cast-Allright

8.Oasis- Live Forever

9.Pulp-Disco 2000

10.Blur-Country House

Do You Want To Get Your Party Band On TV ?

Tuesday, December 6th, 2011
Do you want to get on TV?

Do you want to get on TV?

“We are looking for groups of workmates who have formed bands or musical acts for an exciting new musical competition show where people from different professions across every region in the UK will perform against each other.

Since you offer a selection of tribute acts, I was wondering if perhaps you knew of any that have arisen as a result of their working together?

If you could distribute the flyer via anyone you think who may be suitable or alternatively if you could recommend a direct contact of a pre existing group I would be very grateful.

We’re looking to confirm acts before Christmas and then film a pilot in the early New Year, so to be in with a chance of taking part the sooner we hear from interested parties, the better.”

Live Music Management are often approached by TV companies looking for acts for a particular show…recently Britains Got Talent were in touch about a cabaret act for next years series.

If anyone thinks that their wedding band suits the brief above then please do get in touch.

You may well join the long list of LMM party bands and function bands who have appeared on TV (more of that shortly!!)

The Top Ten Best Cover Versions….Ever!!

A Great Cover Band

A Great Cover Band

A cover version is a version of a song already released by another artist. All the LMM wedding bands , function bands and party bands are essentially cover bands playing well known songs in their own style. Their is also a rich tradition of well known acts covering other peoples songs. Below is a top ten list of songs bettered by the cover. Often these songs have become the definitive article.

You can hire a great cover band from Live Music Management. Call 08454 900515 or email us for details.

1.Ami Winehouse-Valerie….Ami took an okay song by The Zutons and made it into a carear defining hit.

2.Marvin Gaye-Heard It Through The Grapevine…part of the Motown philosophy was to let several acts cover the same song and battle it out but this version beats the Gladys Knight version by several miles.

3.Elvis Presley-Blue Suede Shoes….took Carl Perkins rock a billy original and sexed it up…and then some.

4.Primal Scream-Slip Inside This House….the 13th Floor Elevators obscuro made into a dreamy dance rock classic.

5.Happy Mondays-Step On…..I grew up listening to John Kongos original version of this but never dreamed it could be popped up and made into a massive dance floor hit.

6.The Beatles-Twist And Shout…took a great version by The Isley Brothers and made it even better.

7.The Clash-I Fought The Law….Bobby Fullers rock and roll hit amped up to the max.

8.The Wondermints-Knowing Me/Knowing You….for those who love Abbas songs but wish they would rock out a bit!

9.Adele-Make You Feel My Love…..hate to say this as I am a life long Bob Dylan fan but if you play this alongside the wheezy original 9 out of 10 people will prefer Adele.

10.Aretha Franklin-Respect….well she knocked spots off Otis Reddings original and made it her own.

Should Musicians And Bands Be Paid?

Thursday, November 24th, 2011

WEdding entertainment

Last week I contacted a large festival down on the South Coast as I thought one of our acts would suit their bill. The response I got amazed me. Their email said (and I paraphrase)  ”Please remove us from your mailing list. In 2010 our event attracted over 40,000 people and we have a policy of not paying our acts or offering any expenses.” It went onto to say that it was registered as a charity (although it didn’t go on to mention any worthy charities it raised money for.)

Of course struggling musicians trying to find an audience for their original music projects will always need to perform some shows F.O.C but with 40,000 people attending this event it’s hardly like playing to a dozen people in the back room of a pub. Even without an admission charge the event must generate some serious money either through sponsorship, council grants, food or drink sales etc. The badge of honour that they didnt pay musicians wound me up.

To reach the level of a musician worthy of playing in front of an audience takes years of training and skills comparable to any other trade.

The equiptment required to be a gigging electric guitarist, for instance, can run into the thousands.

A gigging band often carries tens of thousands of pounds worth of equiptment once you take into consideration the cost of PA and lights.

Rehearsal room costs can be as much as a couple of hundred pounds per session and are rarely less than forty.

On top of that there is the cost of van hire or purchase and the fuel costs to get to an event.

If we are talking about a wedding band , a function band , tribute band or party band then you are likley to have stage costumes which need purchasing, dry cleaning and maintaining.

Beyond that there is the matter of PAT certificates which need to be carried out on electrical equiptment and public liability insurance which most clients and venues demand.

At Live Music Management we specialise in supplying mobile djs and party acts , wedding bands and nightclub DJs for bars, parties, wedding and events. We believe in a fair price for a job well done and we represent the best acts in the UK in these fields.

We are proud of the fact that they get paid for their services.

After all you wouldn’t dream of ringing a plumber and suggesting he does your job for charity.

Postcards From Orlando

Postcasrds From Orlando

Postcasrds From Orlando

We were a little quiet with the blogs over the last couple of weeks and that’s mainly because I tend to write most of the updates and I was on holidays in Florida (lucky old me.)

It is understandable why many entertainment or service driven companies send their staff to Orlando and to the Disney parks in order to gain experience and training. Disney deliver every little aspect of their business with style and panache and offer their guests a great experience right from the get go (although it has to be said that the quality of their welcome is marred somewhat by the 60 to 90 minute queues for the rides.)

Back in the 1990s when I first traveled to Florida I was blown away by the quality of the cover bands playing in the parks and clubs over there. At the time there was very little over here that seemed to be in the same league. The UK bands could deliver creativity (noticeable that many of the covers played by the American bands were of songs written and recorded by UK acts) but when it came to function bands we were way behind.

I am pleased to say that this doesn’t seem to be the case anymore.

The standard of live bands I have seen on my last two trips over to Florida has been very high but nothing that the likes of Sugar Shack , Jade, After Dark, Brainscape , Electric Mayhem or dozens of other acts on LMM’s roster cannot touch. The UK party bands have raised their game tremendously in the last fifteen years.

They do put on a brilliant show over there  and sat in the Shamu show at Seaworld watching the pyrotechnics and the slick presentation of the Shamu Rocks show I was very proud that one of our DJs was running this very show himself until recently. Paul Shaw had worked for LMM for five years when he relocated to Florida with his American wife and took the show manager job at Seaworld. He is now back in the UK working for LMM at Walkabout venues and at the Highlight bars.

It is also worth noting that another of our DJs,Matt Stevens, got his first break working at Disney when he was resident in Florida and spent sometime at the Disney Training Academy.

There is no doubt that the parks and entertainment services in Florida are second to none and watching some of the acts over there is a lot of fun but also an education .

If you are looking for advice on booking a cover band or DJ for a wedding or party please give our office a call on 08454 900515.
