With the longest day upon us and the (usually) decent weather June is the perfect month for a garden party and the start of the season of outdoor weddings and events.
This weekend just past the LMM team went to two garden parties (actually both at the same house….Friday went so well they invited everyone back for Saturday!!) and so I wanted to take this opportunity to offer a massive thank you to our friends and neighbours for inviting us to their birthday party (and for putting on such a fantastic event) and also whilst the garden party is fresh on my mind just to outline what makes a night like this special….and believe me it was special both my eleven year old and nine year old commented during the night how lucky we were to have such lovely neighbours and the eleven year old sat by the fire at Midnight as a band played in the background said “I really like this…I’ll remember tonight forever.”
You cant get better praise than that.
What makes a great garden party?
Good food and plenty of drink.
Our event had a fantastic hog roast with a local farmers rare breed pig and luckily another neighbour works for a brewery so we had a cask of real ale amongst other drinks provided by the generous host.
We were spoilt with a skiffle band starting the night off followed by a live band from Brighton.
Something spectacular .
Again we were spolit for choice. The party came to a climax with a spectacular fire juggling display which left everyone speechless. There was also a massive bonfire which provided a beautiful centrepiece to the evening.Theres something about a big fire to sit and get warmed by…just watching the flames is an event in itself.
Something Funny
Everyone at the party had a white t shirt with a slogan about the host.We kept them hidden i n bags or under jackets and then we revealed them at the given moment. The next half hour was spent wandering around looking at everyones slogan…the kids especially loved it.
Candles and lights.
Fairy lights strewn across trees, tea lights on tables, little battery operated lights which change colour along walls. They all added to the ambience.
Citronella!!!
Make sure you have some mosquito repellent oils or candles….its amazing how many times you can get bitten after dark on a warm summers evening without something to drive the little beasties away.
Great Company
You can’t hire this in but at the end of the day its friends and family that make a night special….thanks again to our friends for making Friday and Saturday so memorable and going to such trouble. The occasion was to celebrate a birthday but we got (and the hosts partner got) a big shock towards the end of the night when the host got down on one knee and proposed to his partner of ten years. It was a fantastic moment and led to them having another party on Saturday night where myself and another neighbour brought out the guitars and sang Oasis,Beatles,Springsteen,Ami Winehouse etc until the early hours.
We are already looking forward to the wedding!!!!
