I had a great time on Saturday night organising the musical entertainment for a friend of mines 50th birthday party.
We gave it some serious thought in advance of the big day as the birthday boy is a massive music fan and we wanted to reflect his musical taste whilst at the same time not alienating the rest of the party guests.
I guess this is a challenge for all party planners.
The DJ music came from an Ipad plugged into the in house PA system with a playlist chosen by the birthday boy. For the rest of the evening we organised an acoustic set featuring two guitars and uke following by a short live band set. The acoustic set was designed to be upbeat but not too in your face and the band set was an opportunity for people to dance to a party band.
Besides this we had a special birthday treat up our sleeve with a piano / vocal medley which comprised seventeen songs sung in eight minutes covering all the key music which this music mad fifty year old has loved over the years. We handed out quiz sheets and the winner was the person who spotted the most artists and song tittles.
Surprisingly a few people got sixteen out of seventeen. The majority got about half of the songs but two guests spotted the little riff from New Orders Blue Monday which we sneaked in as a trick track and got the full compliment of seventeen out of seventeen.
It was a brilliant night and an honour to be asked. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff from Sheffields Dada Bar who were so helpful and Brandon for his work with the piano,Pete from Boy On A Dolphin, Phil from Calico Fever and Andy from Secret Sun. Also Bails from the Heavily Pregnant Brothers who kindly loaned us his PA and whose contribution was invaluable.
For information on how to book a band please give the LMM office a call.
