Keeping The Faith
I received a text message from DJ Big Al on Saturday night http://www.lmmuk.com/djs-karaoke.php He was DJing at a wedding in London and had a request from a guest that he was struggling with.
In advance of the wedding he had spoken to the bride and groom and had all bases covered for the music that they wanted to be played at the wedding however on the night a guest came up to the DJ booth and requested that he play “some Northern Soul.”
By Big Als own admission this is the one area of music he would say he was no expert on.Its his Achilles heel,the chink in his armour.
If the guest had asked for a specific song he would have been able to see if he had it in his box or possibly downloaded it (the wonders of modern wireless technology.)Because it was a more general request by someone who liked Northern Soul to dance to but was,herself,no expert Al put on his thinking cap and texted me.
I wouldnt claim to be a great expert myself but I know enough about soul,motown and northern soul to be able to make the suggestions which ensured that the guest got a few great Northern Soul style tracks to dance to and that Al got a massive pat on the back.
The following five tracks are the suggestions I text-ed over to Al…the top five Northern Soul songs to play at a wedding.As with all of these things its open to argument,discussion,or in the case of people immersed in the scene,derision and name calling but I think its a pretty good,off the cuff list of songs which would be known to most people and would be great to dance to.

I hope if any Northern Soul purists are reading this they will take time to post comments telling us that we don’t know what we are talking about but I am fairly certain that the songs above would be recognised by most people as Northern Soul Classics well known enough to work with any crowd.
