Act profile

Sophie is one of the most exciting and freshest sounds in British jazz. A graduate of the Guildhall School of Music, Sophie has perfected an individual style and is acknowledged as having a voice "rich in tone with great intonation and strong rhythmic sense" (Lee Gibson). Her band is hand-picked from the best young musicians on the London jazz scene: Ross Stanley (piano), Riaan Vosloo (bass) and Graham Fox (drums) - an exciting trio in their own right. Performing an eclectic programme of music, ranging from George Gershwin to Kenny Wheeler to Joni Mitchell, Sophie gives a vibrant, fresh edge to the old jazz standards and complements them perfectly with a choice of contemporary jazz songs and original compositions.

Since graduating she has been enjoying performing around various national and London venues, including the Pizza Express Jazz Club, with some of the finest young jazz musicians on the London scene. She cites her biggest singing influences as Norma Winstone and Liane Carroll. Sophie's sound is soulful and modern, yet influenced by great jazz singers such as Ella and Sarah, and containing all the emotional intensity of Billie Holliday.
